We haven't had a really dominant center in a while but I just checked these figures...
In 2011-12....our starting center was Jordan Prosser- he finished the season with 248 pts & 209 rebounds - but he was a redshirt junior & was able to stay on the floor 863 minutes
In 2012-13....the starting center was another player left over in the cupboard, Will Egolf gave us 300 pts and 163 rebounds in 764 minutes as a 6th year senior
In 2013-14....the starting center was Xzavier Taylor - 108 pts, 101 rebounds in a foul prone 475 minutes - but everyone said that was great and he'd be a star!
In 2014-15....the starting center was Jermaine Morgan - 81 pts, 53 rebs in just 287 foul prone minutes- and he was our only hope 'til Nate Wells got a chance and did better.
This season...our starting center has been Callum Barker...
Some of the media and fans have been pretty harsh on the kid but seriously- he's a TRUE freshman just seeing DI ball for the first time and yet...
He has so far given us 142 pts, 128 rebounds in 652 minutes...
numbers that aren't all that different than what Egidijus Mockevicius put up his freshman season....and way better than what Bola Olaniyan put up his first season and the 1st year totals any of our recent starting centers put up (Morgan, Xzavier, etc..)
In fact, you'd be hard pressed to and any other FRESHMAN center in the recent MVC who's done any better - remember Dinma Odiakosa? (24 pts & 38 rebs total as a freshman) Jordan Egelseder? (82 pts, 49 rebs as a freshman) Jackie Carmichael? (only 135 rebounds his entire freshman season) Randall Falker who used to kill us all the time? (142 pts & 135 rebs as a freshman)
I like Callum and I think he's gotten a little of a raw deal from the refs..but I think he looks better than what we've had the past few years and he can only get BETTER!
