  • Morton vs. Pekin HS Girls

So I'm reading my morning PJS over coffee and run into this little gem in a write-up on this game:

Morton looked like the second-ranked Class 3A girls basketball team for three quarters of a 59-47 victory at Pekin on Saturday night in Hawkins Gym.

The Potters??™ passing was crisp, shooting was deadly and defense was suffocating. They led the Dragons 51-17 with about a minute left in the third quarter of the Mid-Illini Conference contest.

Morton coach Bob Becker was impressed with his team??™s performance, but unimpressed with Pekin??™s belated comeback.

???The game was over. We kicked the crud out of Pekin. There was no chance they were going to win,??? he said. ???I was trying to develop players, to give us some depth. We could have scored 85 or 90 points. But then I would have been a bad guy.???

Way to show some class in representing your team, school and community, coach.

Wow. I have never seen a coach express sentiments like those after his team won a game! Like he expected Pekin to just lay down, allow the Morton girls to run over them, and then allow the Morton coach to use Pekin as fodder "to develop players, to give us some depth", and apparently not even try to score when they had the ball.

Maybe we should feel sorry for those poor Morton girls who actually had to play against a Pekin team who had the gall to not roll over and give up. Absurd.
Becker is a good coach, but I just lost a lot of respect for him.

I was thinking the same thing but I don't think I've ever heard Becker say things like that in the past??¦..I'm wondering if the fact he put his deep subs in and Pekin just played their starters to try and get back in the game ticked him off some. I kind of understand that??¦.most coaches use blowouts to give their deep subs some playing time

I would think not so much to get back In the game, it was out of reach IMO, but to at least make the final score respectable.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

I'm guessing those comments won't get run on the Morton Sports Network, aka WEEK-TV.

Devil's advocate, had I not read the portion from the journalist saying he was "unimpressed with the Pekin comeback" I'm not sure if I would have read that quote as resentful. I realize it's the journalists role to provide emotion to a person in this case, but I'm not so sure that quote may not have been taken out of context. As another poster said, that's a pretty unusual demeanor for Becker to have.
