  • Egidijus Mockevicius

I have made no effort to hide the fact that I really admire this kid from Evansville, and right now he'd have my vote for Player of the Year - and I'd go ahead and just give it to him now...

He has been an automatic double double and is averaging 17.9 point & 14.5 rebounds per game - and that rebound figure is almost certainly to end up being the highest rebounding average for an MVC player since the days of Xavier McDaniel!
His current 14.5 rpg LEADS the nation as we speak.
As noted elsewhere, only a couple players in the past 31 years have even hit 10 rpg, and none over 10.6

1996-1997 Jim Cruse (InSU) averaged 10.6 rpg
..and >10.0 has happened only 5 times in the past 30 years...
the last time anyone grabbed more than 11.0 was 1984-85- Xavier McDaniel grabbed 14.8 rpg.

Evansville's Egidijus Mockevicius is currently averaging 13.5 rpg, which is tied for 2nd nationally
behind LSU's Ben Simmons who is almost everyone's projection for the #1 NBA Draft pick next June.
He's not flashy but I think he does more to help them win than anyone - he also leads the league by far in blocked shots.

Anyone predict what we will "hold him to"?

I think we do a pretty good job but our bigs will undoubtedly get into foul trouble the way the games are being called...
I say he ends up with 14 pts & 12 rebs

btw- the proper pronunciation of his name is:
    E-gid'-E-us Muhs-KA'-vich-us
and he's just the 14th player ever in the MVC to score 1000 points and grab 1000 rebounds

and a couple other key facts for today's game..
DJ Balentine needs FIVE field goals to tie Colt Ryan at #2 in their all time scoring list - #1 is Larry Humes (1964-66) who is 162 ahead.
Egidijus Mockevicius now has 1,016 career rebounds - he needs just 37 to tie Jerry Sloan for #2 all time, with #1 being Dale Wise who has 181 more than Egidijus.
Mockevicius (they nickname him "IGGY" or sometimes "Egi" in their media guide) is just 1 percentage point (.621 vs. .631) behind the Aces' all time FG% career record holder Brian Hill.
Mockevicius also already holds their all time career blocks make at 248.
At his current pace Balentine COULD catch up with Mitchell JJ Anderson (2,341) or even John Williams (2,374 for InSU) as 5th or even 4th all time in MVC scoring.
3rd is Larry Bird but that would be 500 points of 4th.

one of their projected starters for this season was Duane Gibson.
He injured his knee over the summer but was pressed into action when the season started - even tho his knee still bothered him...

    the outcome was not good...
he reinjured his knee - had to undergo more surgery but was brought back AGAIN - re-reinjured his knee A THIRD TIME -
and now had to have a 3rd surgery...and now may miss the entire rest of the season..

His absence and thus the lack of a proven 3rd scorer might just make the difference in getting to the NCAA

Didn't Harold McMath make this list? Which Bradley players are on this list? I know If anyone would know it's you.

McMath was not in the 1000/1000 club. He played 4 seasons for Bradley from 1976-77 through 1979-80 and scored a career total of 725 points, and had 799 rebounds.

Here is a list of the top MVC scorers all time, but this list does not include rebounds.

          actually we did pretty well
Mockevicius was just 2-6, 5 pts, 8 rebs
we are the only team this season to hold him to single digits in both scoring & rebounding

Evansville's Egidijus Mockevicius leads the nation in rebounding with 14.0 rebounds per game.

He has 476 for the season, and that already ranks him 9th all time in season rebound totals in the MVC
            (1- Unseld 533, 2- Unseld 513, then 3- Unseld 505, 4- Bird 505, 5- Jerry Koch 502, 6- Kenon 501, 7- Oscar Robertson 489, 8- Guy Sparrow 489....etc..)

If Evansville plays even one more game and Big E gets his average, then Mockevicius is probably going to move into 7th place. If Evansville ends up playing 2, 3, or 4 games into the post-season, then Egidijus could conceivably tie or BREAK Wes Unseld's season record of 533.
That is amazing - as not one of the MVC's all-time TOP 40 season rebounding totals has come in the past 30 years, and only 5 of them in the last 40 years!!

Now projected starter - Evansville's Duane Gibson gets headlines for a DUI & running a red light right in front of an officer

Marty Simmons mentions "internal discipline" which usually means we won't hear another thing about it...

Egidijus Mockevicius just got a better deal....
the Brooklyn Nets - a team that's extremely weak in the frontcourt, just made a better offer and signed Mockevicius to a partially guaranteed contract worth reportedly $125,000. Mockevicius had a little more leverage than some players since he also had opportunities overseas...

Van Vleet & Baker also got partially guaranteed deals but apparently not for nearly as much..

Very good for Mock. I think all 3 have very good staying power in the NBA, though all with different types of roles. Both Mock and Baker are in good positions, their teams are really short at their respective positions. Van Vleet has a bigger battle as the Raptors already have several PGs.

I don't see any of the three in the NBA this season because of their lack of athleticism and none are exceptionally good shooters. Maybe their best chance is the D-League for a while. I hope I am wrong, but how many white, 6'3" 2-guards who lack extreme athleticism and shoot just 42% from the field and 35% from the college three make it in the NBA? Could he guard James Harden, Klay Thompson, Dwyane Wade, Jimmy Butler, Stephen Curry, etc?

You are absolutely right. If any of the three are on a NBA roster this season, it will be as a fill in for an injury riddled team. There is also not much of a future for players in the NBADL, as far as their NBA future is concerned. I don't care what color they are. Anybody that is 6'3" and has the above percentages, without being extremely athletic, can't play in the NBA for any more than a couple of games.

Evansville Mockevicius gets a $100,000 guarantee for this season so he will likely stay and play D-League if he doesn't make he NBA roster for the Nets.
There's always a remote chance he'd get a bigger offer to play in Europe but not many 1st year guys do.
Egidijus Mockevicius, the NCAA's leading rebounder last season, has signed a one year, partially guaranteed contract with the Nets, according to RealGM. Eric Pincus reports the guarantee is...

Evansville's Egidijus Mockevicius just got cut from the NJ Nets...
now he will decide if he wants to stay & play in the D-League or go play overseas.

Ex-Redbird Nick Zeisloft also got cut.

ex-Indiana State Sycamore Manny Arop signed with Canadian pro team The Niagara River Lions

Egidijus looks like he's gonna stay and play in the D-League

The Nets just released their D-League roster and Egidijus Mockevicius is not only on it, but he's also the tallest player they have on their D-League roster - so he should get some playing time - plus his salary was reported to be guaranteed - so he's not gonna have to settle for the meager D-League average pay.
