  • Northern Iowa loses key player

Key backup guard Austin Aarias is leaving and transferring from UNI
He had been playing about 20 min per game then suddenly his playing time dipped under 10 mpg, then last game just 1 minute...

was avg 5.4 ppg and shooting 38.5% from the arc

also- a Wisconsin kid, backup soph guard Riley Dearring at University of Wisconsin is leaving & transferring...

Coach Jacobson stated Austin left to find more playing time.
He is a 2013 grad of Warren Township HS that used 2 years of eligibility at Des Moines Area Community College before transferring to UNI.
So his only 3 options if he wants to play more college ball are
-transfer to D2 or NAIA and conceivably he could even play 2nd semester
-if he goes to another DI now, he'd have to sit out a year and possibly would be able to play by mid-December 2016 but then that would be his last year and it wouldn't be a full season.
-he also could go DI elsewhere then sit out a year and take the rest of next year as a redshirt year so he'd then have the full year of 2017-18 that he could play.
they already have him scrubbed from their roster - but with their top 3 guards, Washpun, Jesperson, and Bohannon - all seniors
there would have been a tremendous opportunity for the kid if he just stayed and developed...he'd have been in line for a lot of playing time, but now he'll sit out a year and potentially play even less somewhere else.
