The MVC is currently 16th in RPI ranking-
RealTimeRPI.com: RPI, RPI Rankings, college basketball rpi, Real Time NCAA College Basketball and Sports Ratings - the most accurate independent analysis of the NCAA college basketball Rating Percentage Index (RPI)

That is about as low as it has ever been this late into a season since the RPI was developed in 1981. With most of the non-conference games completed, and few matchups with high-ranked opponents, it might not be able to improve very much.

Once the MVC conference games begin, the RPI will not move very much since for every team that wins and moves up, their opponent will lose and move down. Nor will the SOS change very much this year once the non-conference games end, since the MVC is so weak.

Here are the RPI's of the individual teams in the MVC-
RealTimeRPI.com: RPI, RPI Rankings, college basketball rpi, Real Time NCAA College Basketball and Sports Ratings - the most accurate independent analysis of the NCAA college basketball Rating Percentage Index (RPI)

Only 3 teams are better than RPI 190, and those 3 teams (SIU, UNI, and UE) are the only 3 MVC teams with winning records (that link shows only the record vs. D1 opponents, which are the only games figured into the RPI).
I don't expect SIU to remain as high as they are, and I expect Wichita State to rise significantly. UNI plays 4 of their last 5 non-conference games on the road, and the home game is against a tough Iowa State team. Evansville has tough road games at Murray State and Arkansas this coming week. So even UNI and UE could have trouble staying where they are. But it is becoming clear that the MVC is looking like another 1-bid season.

One more thing- the entire MVC has only 2 wins against Top 50 RPI teams- UNI's upset of North Carolina and Indiana State's win at home against #24 Hofstra ( a win that probably won't look nearly as "quality" by the end of the season). This is by far the fewest "quality" wins this far into the season by the MVC in many years, perhaps ever!

In my opinion, this is the case: The Valley is down, mainly due to the fact that three perennially good programs, SIU, MSU, and BU did not benefit from their most recent coaching changes.

There are 4 really good teams in this league. WSU, ILST, UNI, and Evansville. They are tournament caliber teams that will be very difficult to beat on their home floors.

Witchita is in a funk, but I expect them to get out of it. Evansville could have used a better schedule. UNI is playing well and looks to be an at large contender. ILST has the talent but lacks the chemistry, but I see them being a tough out in the Valley season.

The rest of the league is pretty bad, Loyola should be better, but seems not to be. Indiana State is a young team, Drake is a young team. The Bears and Salukis made bad coaching hires, and Bradley is rebounding from a poor hire.

It is difficult for the Valley to schedule, rare to get a good team on your schedule, rarer on your home floor, but the Valley is seeing regular contests with BCS schools through the tournament setups. Which is a good thing, but we need to grab some wins.

So yeah, we are a rebuilding conference with its best team having some bad luck. Are we the 16th best conference in the nation, I guess I watch enough basketball to know that isn't the case.

By the way, I meant Geno Ford when I said Bradley didn't benefit from its most recent hire. I expect Wardle to do well at BU.

Yes, actually ISU is better than 190. I just happened to use RealtimeRPI, which must have a different formula than other sites.
The various RPI sites seem all to have different formulas to calculate their RPI numbers.
Realtime RPI has ISU at 190-

Warren Nolan has them at 167-

          ESPN has them at 151
Find the 2024-25 NCAAM rankings on ESPN, including the Coaches and AP poll for the top 25 NCAAM teams.

Probably the most accurate is the NCAA's own RPI website-
Get NCAA college basketball rankings from the Associated Press, USA Today Coaches poll and the NCAA NET Rankings.

It is only updated once every day or two, but shows ISU at 166. Still my point was they are nowhere near where they need to be to be a postseason team.

RealtimeRPI (which you linked) has had ISU at 159 all day.

But I get what your saying.

Still pretty early for the RPI. Incarnate Word hasn't won a DI game and are a top 50 team right now according to the RPI.

For some reason, my computer must have been pulling up a cached verson of that RealtimeRPI page. I kept seeing 190 for ISU's RPI, but now I see the 159. The Kentucky game must have helped improve it.

After the weekend games, the Missouri Valley remains ranked 13th in conference RPI.
2015-2016 Men's College Basketball Conference RPI (Rating Percentage Index) - a ranking of conference based on the average RPI of the teams in the conference, plus non-conference wins and losses, the best teams and automatic bids from the conferences.

The MVC combined record against other D1 opponents has now fallen to 49-54 (58-54 counting non-D1 opponents), and is likely to remain under .500 going into the conference schedule. This is the first time I can ever recall the MVC finishing their non-conference schedule with a losing record.

                One more concerning item-
Nearly all the top players in the league- Fred Van Vleet, Ron Baker, Edigius Mockevicius, D.J. Balentine, Anthony Beane, Wes Washpun, DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell, Devonte Brown, Camyn Boone, Paul Jesperson, Matt Bohannon, Devon Turk, Khristian Smith (all are among the top 20 scorers in the MVC) are all seniors. Never can I recall a year when there was so few underclass players among the elite players in the league. This does not bode well for next year.
IMO, there will be all seniors on the All MVC 1st team and possibly 2nd team, and Milton Doyle and possibly Reed Timmer, may be the only non-seniors who right now appear to have a clear chance to be named on the 2nd team or Honorable Mention team.

From a WSU perspective, I think next year your big 3 names that will compete for ALL-MVC teams are Frankamp, McDuffie, and Brown. Will they make it there ? I dunno, but they have potential. One of the reasons they haven't stepped fully into the spotlight is because Fred and Ron are still here. They command the minutes and attention (for good reason). I think there are underclassmen that will become stars, but i agree, next year will be an overall step back from the top MVC teams (WSU, UNI, Evansville)

The beat writer for the Missouri State team posts a column evaluating his team and the rest of the MVC teams going into conference play-

Personally, even though he cites some negatives among the MVC teams so far, I still think he is a little overly optimistic. Outside the top 3 teams, there is very little good news that's happened in the MVC this season, and he fails to note the overall conference RPI is possibly the lowest it has been in decades.

Missouri State's Paul Lusk has been hit hard with gobs of defections and season ending injuries to key players.
Now fans want to run him out and start over--- --- the very same fans who were sure Barry Hinson couldn't coach. Some even thought Cuonzo Martin couldn't coach.
They'll never be happy...seems that they want to go thru 4-5 more years of misery like the BU fans had to go thru because of stupid moves...

Talk about a difference over a decade...
only two teams have currently a sum of under 200 if RPI & SOS are added together
                        (UNI has RPI 53 & SOS 31, Wichita has RPI 56 & SOS 6)

back in 2006, the TOP SIX teams all had under 100 on th same sum..

Missouri Valley Conf All RPI Rk RPI SOS Rk
