  • Player(s) of the Game

With the late game and all the celebrating, and with all the time the board problems were going on, I have had time to start a thread about the individual players. There were some outstanding performances.

Daniel Ruffin- 26 minutes, 11 points, 7 assists, and just 2 turnovers against the heralded defense of Kansas. Ruff even played some pretty awesome defense himself. His performance did not stand out as much as some of the others, but was every bit as significant. There were fans around me who said that Kansas could relly use a point guard like Daniel.

Will Franklin- 26 minutes, 5-9 shooting, 2-3 on 3's, 14 points and 6 assists. (I thought he was just supposed to be an adequate backup?) What a performance! If anyone says that early in the year they thought Will Franklin would have such a dominating performance in the NCAA against Kansas, they would have been laughed at and carted away! Those numbers are better than McDonald's AA's Mario Chalmers, and way better that Brandon Rush (1 assist betwee them!). Will also played unbelieveable defense.

J.J. Tauai- 17 minutes, 3-3 shooting, 1-1 on 3 pointers.8 points 3 rebounds, 3 steals. The game of his life. J.J. wasn't in the game at the end, but he was one of the major reasons Bradley was ahead virtually the whole game

Marcellus Sommerville- The best player on the floor. That's not just my opinion, it seems to be the opinion of every writer, and many of the Kansas fans. 37 minutes, 7-15, 5-9, and 21 points to lead all scorers. He also had 7 rebounds. And Cellus played great defense all night on Rush and Julian Wright.

Patrick O'Bryant- 26 minutes because of foul trouble. But he was big. 8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and he completely neutralized Sasha Kaun, the NBA prospect cenetr for Kansas. POB was an inside force, and even though he wasn't credited with any blocks, he helped keep most of the Kansas action away from the basket.

Tony Bennett- his offense usually suffers a little when he expend so much effort on defense. But 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists is still a pretty good game. There are a couple McDonalds All Americans on Kansas that would have liked to have as good a game as TB. He played outstanding defense all game

Zach Andrews- only 12 minutes, 2 points, 4 rebounds, but was very valuable in spelling POB, and playing great defense on the Kansas big men.

Lawrence Wright- like Zach, he sacrificed his game a little for the team by concentrating on denense. His work kept the Kansas guys from getting to the basket, and made them into a much more perimeter team. It was a big part of why Bradley lead virtually the entire game.

Danny Adams- only 4 minutes, but his effort and hustle really helped. Bradley did not lose their lead when the bench guys came in the game, and that was huge. It was amazing to see Danny guarding Brandon Rush when he was in the game, and Rush couldn't score or do anything against Danny!

The coaches- great game plan, and even better game coaching. Jim Les and the guys outcoached Bill Self, and have put Bradley back on the map. I can't remember a single coaching move that didn't come out looking good.

Great job by everyone. It's hard to find just 1 or 2 players of the game. It was a team effort. Even the rest of the bench was cheering and into the game like I have never seen.

    Bradley is Back!

Excellent analysis, coach! I thought the outcome of the game hinged on our guard play. We had to take care of the ball, defend the 3-point line well, and score points off any Kansas turnovers that came our way. For better than 30 minutes, our guard play was superior to theirs. We were 11 of 23(?) from 3-point range, and our turnover points statistic at one time was a gaudy 20-0! The Jayhawks hit some shots from long range late in the game, and they began to force some turnovers to help them get back in contention--glad the game ended when it did! My Big 4 performers for BU were: Ruffin, Tauai, Franklin, Sommerville--in no particular order. When you have that kind of balance, you really have no MVP for the game--a total team victory!!

I thought the team with the least turnovers would win and it turned out that way. The game against Pitt will be decided on the boards. The team who protects against second chances the most will win. I'm glad ZA played some real good minutes yesterday because he will be playing more on Sunday, just my hunch. With all the banging Pitt does JL will have to rotate the big men a bit more to keep them fresh.

The coaching was great. They made the most of nearly every possession.

I was ecstatic to see Bradley foul intentionally near the end when the had 1 more "foul to give" before Kansas shot free throws. That took more time off the clock, and disrupted Kansas' momentum. Just a small thing, but a lot of coaching staffs don't recognize those things and take advantage of them. I like the way Bradley tries to get the 2 for 1 possessions at the ends of halves, too. Somthing few other college coaches do. And the defense has been awesome since the Indiana State loss.

I will echo those thoughts and add a few more

Zach Andrews wowed the crowd with his spring off the floor onto his feet.

BU guards started their defense on the KU guards sometimes 45 feet from the basket, disrupting them and many times preventing them from even getting to the screens that were set to free them up.

The foul to give at the end of the game was indeed a nice, smart move that ate up at least 5-10 extra seconds.

The BU crowd was wayyyy into this game and was far, far better than the crowds of any other team.
The Pitt & Kent State crowds were OK but were NOT dressed as uniformly in team colors and just didn't make that much noise.

KU had maybe as many fans there as BU, but again, a lot of them must have fotgotten to bring their blue and so there just wasn't any real uniformity to their section.
Also, since they fell behind they just never made much noise.

One time when the KU crowd started chanting Go KU, GO, GO KU......with thier band playing, the BU people started the exact same cheer but with Go BU instead and drowned the Kansas right down the drain. We were at least 2X louder!!!

Definitely a great game all around. The only thing i had to question a little was the absense of JJ at the end of the game, especially with the great D he was playing...but i guess someone had to be the odd man out from our 4 guards who all played amazing games. Lets see more of it tomorrow.
