  • MVC Injury Report

Thankfully for the teams in the MVC - this has been a remarkably injury-free first 10-days of the season...
The only a few injuries of note that I can find involving MVC teams are...

-Wichita's Fred Van Vleet played only 3 minutes in their opener against Charleston Southern before re-injuring the leg then was on the mend and played 30 minutes in their close loss to Tulsa a week ago but re-injured it again and hasn't played since.
...He's said to have an aggravation of a left hamstring injury...although at one point they threw out an "ankle injury" as well.
This article seems to suggest he may be out a while.

This injury to Fred Van Vleet happened almost a month ago even before the season started and there was discussion that maybe he should sit out their first game vs. Charleston Southern - but he played and re-injured himself and did again against Tulsa but played anyway (LINK)- so maybe now if he has to miss several more games, although it's always easier with hindsight - they might have made bad decisions about playing him when injured.

-Bradley's Antoine Pittman, a freshman sub who gets good minutes when healthy (18 min per game), missed two games with ankle sprain, but now seems recovered after sitting out and played well yesterday.

-Missouri State has Tyler McCullough still out with severe shoulder injury, not expected back for at least a month - likely longer - LINK

-although not an MVC team injury- the high profile injury to UNC's star Marcus Paige may have played a factor in UNI's upset of the #1 team!

-Indiana State has both TJ Bell & Bronson Kessinger out for the season with injuries - previously reported

BTW- the only injury for any team on our upcoming schedule is UT-Arlington's Mairega Clarke, who has a concussion and has yet to play - but
maybe they won't need him - UT-Arlington just beat Ohio State 73-68 in OHIO!!

Also of note: WSU's most promising Freshman Landry Shamet (averaging ~9 ppg so far) is most likely out for the Advocare Tournament. He's undergoing an MRI for a Stress Reaction today. Hearing he might be out a month or so.

EDIT: Could be out 6-8 weeks apparently. Injury similar to Ron Baker's his freshman year.

Landry Shamet's injury is described in the Wichita press as a stress reaction in his left 5th metatarsal (long arch bone)
..however - one other official Wichita State source quotes Gregg Marshall as saying it is "a stress fracture" - perhaps quite a bit more severe than "stress reaction".
And now a new report says Shamet will have surgery tomorrow - possibly complicating any predictions about recovery - maybe prompting talk of redshirt.

This kind of injury is really variable from one person to the next...so nobody can predict precisely how it'll go, but there are some who can heal and do well with just a few weeks in a walking boot...
then....there are some players, especially big men & those with powerful jumping forces...
that seem to take forever to get better.

Guys like Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and even our Andrew Warren all needed at least one surgery - sometimes more, and a year off to get back to form.

Just in the past few months, several notable basketball have also been sidelined with 5th metatarsal fractures...most expected out at least 4 months.

Kevin Durant - expected out for the season
Nets' starting center Brook Lopez - missed much of TWO entire seasons
      Piston's guard out four months
Top college player has been in a walking boot for FIVE MONTHS with similar stress fracture and just now cleared - but ability to play still uncertain- in his first four games he's not what was expected as he is shooting only 27% and only 11% on 3-pt shots

Gregg Marshall now says freshman backup point guard Landry Shamut will have surgery and will miss 10-12 weeks-

It would seem likely he'll redshirt, rather try to come back when the season is ending.

I heard an updated timetable yesterday of 6 to 8 weeks (I believe that was after the MRI, whereas the 10 to 12 was just after an x-ray)

With that said, I think the redshirt might depend on how the rest of the team is doing. The next month will be rough for WSU missing 3 of their expected top 4 guards this year. (FVV, Shamet, Frankamp). Once Frankamp becomes eligible Dec 12th, we will have a better idea if Shamet should try to come back. If he can make an immediate impact, the need for Shamet is lessened. If the team is still struggling, and Shamet is able to make it back say mid to end of January (8 weeks or so) then he might not take that redshirt.

One other possiblity is that Shamet isn't planning on staying 4 years in college. While a long shot, he has the IQ, talent and athleticism to get drafted if he lives up to his potential. He was definitely the best Freshman the first 3 games. If that's the case, the extra year of eligibility isn't needed.

Hey- I am no expert on Landry Shamet and I hope he's back to 100% in record time!!
...but I have done a little reading on this kind of fracture....and here's the discouraging truth- most recoveries take a whole lot longer!
I doubt you can show me a player who had a fractured metatarsal needing surgery - who was back to his full pre-injury state in any time under 6 months..
Those timetables are pure theoretic and hopeful at this point..
sure that's the time span that it takes for bones to heal strong enough to clear the player for full activity - but in the interval - they have to cut thru skin, muscles, tendons, and even some nerves....
Then you get a substantial atrophy during the long non-weight-bearing period, requiring many more months of re-conditioning,
..then since everything will feel different down the road, it'll take even longer for Shamet to recondition all the reflexes required to play and jump without thinking about the possibility of re-injury - which by the way is substantial - just ask Andrew Warren and a couple of those other guys on the list above.
Or any of these basketball players - who were all out well over 6 months with 5th metatarsal fractures..
Glen Davis, Aaron Gordon, Georges Niang, Bill Walton, Kevin Durant likely out this whole year, Yao Ming, and I also found a dozen or more Premier League soccer stars who also missed 6 months or more with the same injuries..

This is very very true. Its all speculation. Marshall said it was a similar injury to what happened to Baker his Freshman year. Ron was out from mid December to the beginning of March. If Shamet, can do what Ron did for us in 2013 (return and be a key player on a Final Four run )... I'll be perfect happy. With that said, I would also be perfectly happy to have another year of eligibility for Shamet. He's going to be a special player in his time at WSU.

Missouri State - the hits just keep coming for them....

They share the basement in the MVC at 0-2, and are hosting UNI tonight.
They will be missing 3 key players..

Austin Ruder, sharpshooter who has been their best 3-pt shooter the past couple years - is out with a hip injury and head coach Paul Lusk says he is NOT EXPECTED BACK THIS SEASON!

Dorrian Williams, starting point guard who had 128 assists last year and who was averaging 4.5 assists this year plus 7.4 ppg - is out with hamstring and Coach Lusk says he will be out "for an extended period of time".

Shawn Roundtree, backup guard who can play PG - also out with hamstring and Coach Lusk says not expected back this season!

Here's another tough one- gonna give UIC's youngsters a big opportunity for playing time...
UIC's 2nd best scorer, past BU-recruit Dominique Matthews - fractured his thumb last week and is out for the season.
He has already played nine games but....but that should still leave him eligible for redshirt.
At the same time, UIC's senior guard Gabe Snider also has foot injury and it out at least a couple weeks.

Heralded Wichita State freshman Landry Shamet had what was originally called a "stress reaction" in his foot last November and who was projected intially to miss about a month. But then it was upgraded to a "stress fracture", and projected to miss 6-8 weeks. But as tornado posted above, sometimes these injuries are worse than first thought, and last much longer than initial estimates.
Shamet ended up having surgery at the end of November, and has still never recovered enough to return.
He played in only 3 early-season games, and averaged 8.7 ppg, which still ranks 3rd in scoring average for the Shockers.

Now, he is still having stiffness as he ramps up his workouts, and they are now planning to redshirt him-

could be a good idea- if he plays even one second beyond the midpoint of the season, then he would risk losing the option to redshirt

The ironic part is .. his foot is fine. Its not the surgery that is causing the issue. Its his ankle from being in a cast/boot for so long. Its taking a while to work that stiffness out. They still have not decided and Ron Baker had a similar injury his Freshman year (2013 Final Four year) and didn't return until the MVC tournament. With that said, Ron was going to be immediately taking minutes from someone as he was better. Landry would just be an addition. He's not going to take minutes from Ron or Fred. He might steal a few minutes from Conner, but Conner is more than serviceable as is.
