  • Mike Shaw decides to end career due to back issues

Mike Shaw has decided to end his basketball career as a degenerative back disorder will not allow him to play-

Mike's absence will mean Bradley will need to get more minutes out of the freshman big men- Barker, Cooper, van Bree, and James. We may even need to see Peter Hanley play a little.

One more tidbit- Mike Shaw will be able to graduate this December, and there is talk of him becoming a graduate assistant and staying with the team.

That is a tough situation for Mike but I wonder if he's exhausted every opportunity to get the Sam-Singh-6th year and try to come back next year?
That leaves us with only 10 scholarship players plus two walk-ons...wonder if we'll see the injury excuse in every article this season.

also as part of the announcement on Mike Shaw, Bradley also officially announces the addition of D'Angelo McBride to the team..
PEORIA, IL - What likely already was the youngest team in college basketball got even younger Monday with the announcement Bradley senior Mike Shaw will not play this year due to chronic back problems

..but we noted that here over a week ago..LINK

Will it bother you more if you see the injury excuse used or if you don't see it?

        Just wondering

no - I have always said that injuries ARE part of the story, legitimate topic for inclusion in the discussion, and legitimately can be the reason for poor performance, especially at mid-majors where no head coach can be expected to have blue chippers just sitting in reserve for that occasion.

...but I have cited the prior pattern where the injury excuse was staunchly DIS-allowed and even rejected as phony for several years leading up to 2011 when the head coach lost two All-MVC starters for the entire season, then suddenly after that it was used in every article for four years as an excuse for all the losing, horrible coaching moves, missed layups, 40-point blowouts, and games where we scored only 38 points (even when it was NOT injuries but arrests & suspensions!)
I then predicted we will NOT see the injury excuse any more, and so far right on..

I feel bad for Mike Shaw. He seems like a good young man who is dedicated to Bradley. He stayed with us through the coaching change.

I have a question now about Mike not playing. What effect does this have on scholarships for this year?

              Thanks guys.

Usually with an injury, the scholarship can't be re-used, so the team is stuck playing with one less scholarship player.

However, if it is a career-ending injury, the school can appeal to the NCAA for a special medical injury waiver that would allow the injured player to remain on scholarship until they graduate, plus the school can get an extra scholarship to use for another recruit for as long as it takes for the injured player to complete a 4-year degree. In Mike Shaw's case, it's too late to recruit another kid, Mike Shaw would have been done at Bradley after this year anyway, so Bradley will not be appealing to the NCAA

                  BU House of (Injury) Horrors!

Another BU player injury, leaving BU MBB short again, this time a rare big man.

Is there some sort of secret curse on BU MBB?

Did BU MBB sell its soul to the devil to make it to the Big Dance and pull off two big upsets to reach the Sweet 16 that year?

Did BU AD prevent a billy goat from entering Carver or the Renaissance Arena since BU's NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in the mid 2000's?

Did Granger pull some sort of 'voodoo' on BU after they made it to the NCAA's a couple years after he left for NM in a huff over JL?

Time to do some sort of exorcism at Carver to get rid of the evil spirits causing this program to suffer ever since?
