  • Callum Barker

Callum might be the one player most fans have heard the least and maybe know the least about...
But he's one of the players I had a chance to talk with a bit last night, and he's a really pleasant & personable kid with an everpresent huge smile.

As most know, Callum arrived later than most of the players - not 'til nearly August...
I asked how long it took to get over his jet lag (he flew a 15 hour trek from Tasmania to Australia to the US)..and he laughed and said not too long...
He's got an enjoyable accent, he likes Peoria, he is having a great time with his teammates - and as one of the other players said - he's going to be our "enforcer".
Callum seemed unaware of another Aussie who once played for Bradley..but he was familiar with the midwest and the MVC because for a year preceding his verbal to Bradley he was being recruited by other schools - most notably Loyola.
He is big and strong and likes to hang out in the paint and keep the other guys out.
But what I liked most was his friendliness, willingness to chat with fans, and his enjoyable down-under accent.
He knows the step up from playing club ball in Tasmania to the upper levels of Division I is not easy. Time will tell if he can star at this level but I sure hope he does.
I wish him great success at Bradley - and I hope he becomes our all time best Aussie player at Bradley!!

Bradley's win at Loyola had to have been sweet for Callum Barker.
He played 26 minutes, scored 10 points and had a team-high 9 rebounds.

But beside the fact he had a very good game, it must have felt good for Callum to beat Loyola and Coach Porter Moser who betrayed and tried to screw Barker.
Callum Barker had multiple scholarship offers last year, his final year of high school in Tasmania, and he had a lot of interest from a other D1 colleges in the US. But he committed to and accepted a scholarship from Porter Moser about a year ago. But before it came time to sign the National Letter of Intent last April, Moser informed the Barker family that he would not accept a Letter of Intent from Callum, because he (Moser) had "over-recruited" by one recruit, and did not have enough scholarships to go to all the recruits who had committed to Loyola for 2015.
That left Callum without a scholarship and with few options. By then, all of the schools that had previously offered him no longer had open scholarships or they were no longer interested in him, having dropped off after he committed to Loyola. Thankfully, Coach Wardle became aware of Barker through his assistant coach Drew Adams, who has strong recruiting connections in Australia, and the rest is history.
Callum is extremely happy to be at Bradley, but there are still some hard feelings toward Porter Moser about how he handled things by screwing Callum.

Great story so glad we have him.

Hopefully he can continue to play with that kind of an edge.

          Callum Barker's final FRESHMAN STATS:
          32 games, 26 starts, 5.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg - admittedly not overwhelming...

but here are the TOP stats that I can find in Bradley basketball history for FRESHMAN CENTERS - all the way back to when freshmen were not eligible - (and threw in one from a couple years earlier)
Note- some were listed as forwards - but I have listed the ones who played center.
Not many did substantially better than Callum - so if he can keep fouls in check, he can have a fine sophomore season! Go Braves!
(some of the guys below Callum on this list - Bayo, Powell, Egolf, Koita - had pretty decent careers!)

          Patrick O'Bryant 10.0 ppg, 7.4 rpg
Gene Melchiorre 9.8 ppg (yes he played center)
Greg Smith 9.0 ppg, 2.4 rpg (only played 21 games)
Harold McMath 6.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg
Cameron Rigby 6.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg
Xanthus Houston 6.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg
Luke Jackson 5.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg
Jordan Prosser 5.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg (redshirt freshman)
Callum Barker 5.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg
Donald Powell 3.8 ppg, 1.9 rpg
Xavier Taylor 3.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg
David Winslow 2.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg
Sam Singh 2.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg
Michael Rembert 2.3 ppg, 2.1 rpg
Bayo Akinkunle 2.0 ppg, 1.3 rpg
Ron Lindfors 2.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg
Tom Prusator 2.0 ppg, 1.3 rpg
Will Egolf 1.5 ppg, 1.4 rpg
James Baptist 1.4 ppg, 1.3 rpg
Brandyn Heemskerk 1.1 ppg, 1.8 rpg
Aba Koita 1.0 ppg, 1.1 rpg
Anthony Thompson 0.6 ppg, 0.9 rpg (redshirt freshman)
Nate Wells 0.6 ppg, 0.4 rpg (redshirt freshman)
Mark Bailey 0.3 ppg, 0.3 rpg

Callum Barker was the main guy we had playing the low post last year and the only player who subbed in to take playing time in that spot last year was Davante Cooper - and Cooper is now gone.

We have two new guys this year who might also look to get minutes in the low post, Alex Foster and Koch Bar.
However - even tho Foster has a little experience (he hardly played at all at Texas Tech) and has bulked up - he's a lot like Mike Shaw in that he likes to drift out of the blocks so I am not sure if he's gonna take a lot of playing time from Callum, although we might need for him to.
Then Koch Bar is so "raw" and inexperienced - I would think he'd play sparingly or redshirt

I am looking forward to seeing Callum's development - word has it he's stronger, quicker, more confident and more ready.
Some of this can be seen here:

He may be better, but we still need some backup support for the center position.
