  • University of Illinois report on illegal drug use by athletes

U of I athletes reportedly tested POSITIVE 65 times in the past season...
    ...for BANNED DRUGS-
Athletes at the University of Illinois tested positive for banned drugs 65 times during the 2014-2015 school year, more than any other year in at least a decade, according to a newspaper report pub…

    mostly footballers, basketball players, baseball....

..expect apologists to claim - "hey everyone's doing it" or "it's no big deal anymore" or "whoa are you behind the times, everyone is doing it and it's a victimless, harmless transgression.."
..but with all that's going on at U of I, all the issues and serious problems they have - not the least of which is less than satisfactory performance in their marquee sports (football, basketball) - you'd think they'd take this a little more seriously --

How do we know how serious they will take it. Story just broke in the Tribune today.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

because the story in the Champaign paper has the numbers from each of the past several years...
and the numbers don't differ much - although they are up some this year...
It seems to me that whatever is being done hasn't improved any of those numbers...
if they were serious - guys would be getting suspended - where are all the suspensions or dismissals...

By their own claim (per the Champaign Gazette version) the U of I people reveal 10 positive tests (mostly marijuana) on basketball players this past season and 30 since 2011.
Their own Academic Code mandates include some pretty significant suspensions...
so the fact that we are seeing a rather status quo approach where nobody's getting any discipline and it keeps happening year after year and even getting worse....seems troubling.

Would love to know how these numbers compare to other schools....but would put it this way....
The only two Bradley players in the past 15 years who I am aware of that were said to have failed a drug test -
not only did both receive suspensions but neither ever played at Bradley again.
I know we may not know the true numbers but it sure seems that the signal I see coming from Bradley is a whole LOT stronger than what I sense coming from U of I where it seems this has been going on similarly for several years and we're not talking small numbers here.
