With the strong emergence of Under Armour into the athletic shoe market in recent years, Nike is upping the stakes.
Under Armour is hosting the top players in the country for it's event that it started last summer called Under Armour Elite 24, which it intends to hold yearly in New York City every August. They have even gotten a deal with ESPN to have it televised.
But now Nike has suddenly created a new event the same weekend, though it has not been publicly announced yet, and they will hold it in the Bahamas! They have already begun contacting the top players and apparently have already gotten some who were planning on attending the Under Armour event to switch to the new Nike event.

The (Nike) event will be held in ... the Bahamas!

Which means Nike has decided the best way to prevent prospects from wearing Under Armour on ESPN is to offer them all-expenses-paid trips to the Bahamas on the exact days as Under Armour's Elite 24. In other words, prospects are now picking between three days in New York or three days on an island with some of the world's most beautiful beaches.

I find the shoe battles fascinating.

I don't know if the stories were true, but I recall one of the reasons that people knew D-Rose would never end up at Illinois was because he was already (through his brother Reggie) financially committed to Adidas.
