SMU, Larry Brown, in another major cheating scandal

Tough luck for SMU, head coach Larry Brown, and ISU's Nic Moore...
SMU will be given somewhat serious penalties for conspiring to alter a recruit's grades...
The big penalty - they will reportedly be banned from post-season play this year and Larry Brown will be suspended and unable to coach 30% of the team's games.
They also will lose THREE basketball scholarships each of the next 3 years. -
Wow - this is more serious than the big boys get, but then SMU is in reality a mid-major trying crash the big boys' party
If you recall, Kansas kinda pulled off this same kind of cheating and got away with it completely.

ESPN's Jeff Goodman thinks SMU will appeal the post-season ban and get it reduced or delayed a year -
either way - I am sure a lot of ISU fans are really sad for Nic Moore who bolted when Jank went to SMU & followed Jank there.
Some think this is just the next logical step in making Jankovich the full time head coach at SMU, ushering Brown out.
This now means that Larry Brown has committed major NCAA violations and gotten major penalties at THREE separate programs (Kansas & UCLA)
Should they not have a THREE STRIKES rule and Larry ought to be banned for life?

Larry Brown, Kelvin Sampson, Bruce Pearl, ...
but as soon as their bans end (and in some cases even before their sanctions end) they get hired again...
and get ready - here come the excuse-makers & enablers - saying "everybody cheats, they just went after Brown cuz he's successful"
btw- if a school is ineligible for post-season play then the athletes can transfer without penalty...
maybe NCAA would extend to this season and let those seniors leave now & play elsewhere- we still have an open scholarship (Warren Jones')
Would Nic Moore want to play closer to home?
Here's the official NCAA release
Download the Southern Methodist University public infractions decision Listen to the press call. Southern Methodist University committed multiple violations,
SMU also has to vacate all the wins they got while Keith Frazier was playing - so a lot of teams (including UIC twice)
pick up an extra win on their record - but no MVC teams...Last edited by tornado; 09-29-2015, 11:15 AM.

The NCAA report on the SMU investigation has been released. Perhaps the most serious charge-
???A former administrative assistant obtained student??™s username and password then completed all of his coursework."

This response by the SMU President is hilarious-
Apparently the SMU President thinks that it was legal for coaches to do the players' course work 25 years ago!
And Larry Brown has been at SMU for 3 1/2 years now. Apparently that is not long enough for Larry brown to learn that cheating isn't allowed!

SMU currently has just one verbal commit for 2016 - a talented (3-STAR) 6-5 point guard/CG DaShawn McDowell, and he's from Oklahoma
(Oklahoma City Southeast HS)
McDowell's initial comment to the media after the penalties is that he is still "solid" to SMU - but I'd have to think that could change - especially if Larry Brown gets forced out.
But SMU also has 3 seniors, 5 juniors, and 3 freshman who may not want to stay around with this uncertainty especially if their season has no hope of post-season play.
Here's more info on their players who might be looking to transfer...
One other thing- two of Mike Bargen's players at Butler Community College (29-4) come back this season as juco sophomores...
and are outstanding players, All Conference and All Region - I am thinking we may have a little recruiting inroads?
Chris Howell - a 6-4 forward from Milwaukee - 12 ppg/7 rpg and 57% shooting pct. - LINK - LINK
Jacolby Harris - a 6-2 combo guard - 11 ppg/3 rpg/3 apg/2.6 spg - LINK - LINK
