Not sure what to believe-- that tweet says Baker had 26 but ......
the official box score shows Ron Baker with 11 points

but we still played poorly most of the game against a bunch of no-name Domincan Republic guys...
and had to rally from 10 points down in the 4th quarter...and gave up 50% on threes (11-22)

btw - Brazil is hammering Canada 34-16 for GOLD

The tweet says "medal round". That refers to the last 2 games. So 15 points against Canada (Baker and Murray went toe to toe in the 4th Quarter) and 11 points against the Dominican Republic.

For those that did watch the games, Baker played very well. He was by far the best defensive player on the team. The last 2 games he really started to pick up on offense as he got more aggressive.

The reason the team did so bad? Point Guard Play. Against Canada Bobby Brown took 20 shots .. yes 20. Only made 8. Against Brazil he took 13 and made 4 (only 2 Asst). Against DR he took 18 and made 8. Between him constantly trying to make a shot for himself and Melo Trimble basically being non-existant or dribbling the ball off his leg, Team USA had no true point guard to run the game. There were so many quick possession where Brown would bring the ball down the floor and take a quick shot or drive without even looking at anyone else. You can't win that way.

getting outrebounded 50-29 by Canada did not help - and practically every team had better team play, passing, more assists

I totally agree with this. Team Play starts with the PG.

Fran Fraschilla on Ron Baker - predicts 1st or 2nd team All American

anyway - I thought Baker was supposed to play some point guard for the US team..but he didn't

In fact the official USA site called him
"an accomplished college point guard with the Wichita State Shockers"!

Mark Few, and the other coaches who put together this team, might have done a bit better job in selecting talent. Baker was one of the better players, which doesn't say much for the ex-NBA and multiple pro players that made up much of the team. Their point guard play especially was not good, and if Baker could have played point any at all, I suspect he would have.
The Pan Am team had only a total of 59 assists on their 157 baskets over the 5 games (they went 3-2). The only point guard who averaged more than 1.4 assists per game was 30 year old ex-NBA vagabond Bobby Brown. If anyone watched any of their games, it was clear the point guard play was sub-par.
