  • Coaches on the hot seat in 2015-16

Never too early to get the hot seat discussion going...

We won't have any worry - and I can't think of too many MVC coaches in this discussion except maybe SIU's Barry Hinson, then maybe Missouri State's Paul Lusk - and Evansville's Marty Simmons only if a few disasters hit there...

Here's an NBCSports article - they name Barry Hinson, Indiana's Tom Crean, Illinois' John Groce, and a few others..
While one coach on the list is coming off of an NCAA tournament appearance, there are others who are dealing with NCAA tournament droughts.

Barry Hinson is having a busy summer thus far...
    Southern Illinoisan article

almost every thread on the Iowa State board either talks about Fred Hoiberg leaving or who will replace him (of course Gregg Marshall's name mentioned) or talks about some new transfer (like Max Bielfeldt) as if that's all Iowa State is ever interested in...in fact, their recruiting thread is essentially merged with their "Transfers available" thread - LOL
But they seem to tie their fortunes to Max Bielfeldt and they think Max will wait 'til Hoiberg's decision is made - but now there's even talk of Hoiberg getting interest from New Orleans for their head coaching position.

With what is going on regarding the football and women's program, I think Groce's job is safe.

Some rumors on the early hot seat

Rutgers- something's happening - gobs of players bolting...

...some rumors head coach Eddie Johnson could be gone sooner rather than later. Would this affect Omari Grier's choice?

also FGCU (Joe Dooley) and Southern Miss (Doc Sadler) are facing bigger projects (FCGU loses all their top players, So Miss dropped to just 9-20) than thought, these guys may look elsewhere - Bulls/Hoiberg will needs asst coaches and both Alabama & Indiana are about to pay well to hire assistants...
Gregg Marshall is supposedly interviewing at Iowa State

        These guys list ...
        Memphis
        East Carolina
        Central Florida
        Portland
        San Francisco
        Santa Clara
        Northern Illinois
        Fresno State

        as early Hot Seat spots..

        ...surprised he doesn't add SIU

I would think there are all kinds of places better than ISU for Marshall.....including where he is now...

Anyone think any of the MVC coaches could maneuver onto the hot seat this season?

I can think of three - but I think two are relative longshots .. barring some scandal or 0-30 debacle...

-Paul Lusk has had a few fans questioning a change at Missouri State, but remember - at the end of 2013-14 he was given a nice raise and contract extension....so he's under contract for FOUR MORE YEARS - not likely they'll wanna pay that.

-Barry Hinson - had a really unexpectedly bad year but then his best players bolted - especially the best young ones - almost guaranteeing another bad season in 201-5-16.
If he suffers a bad your in his 4th at SIU this fall, with a new AD - you have to think he's a goner.

-Marty Simmons - off & on he has a bad enough year that the hot seat talk starts up...but then he does just well enough in response...
This season, barring unexpected disaster - with two of the league's best players, he should avoid buyout talk.

-Gregg Marshall, Ben Jacobson, Greg Lansing, Loyola's Porter Moser, and Dan Muller have been doing well enough that they won't get a mention of "hot seat"

-then Wardle and Giacoletti are new enough that nobody would expect much this soon - and early signs look good for both and their recruiting.

#1 in Tom Crean but the buyout would still be huge

goes to show you...as recently as just TWO MONTHS AGO there were plenty of people calling for Tom Crean to be fired and pay the buyout!

But look what he's done -
Indiana has won 19 of their last 22 games, they just won the Big Ten outright and are the #1 seed and arguably the best team in the conference.
They are 10-3 against top-100 teams and have done this with injuries and unforseen player losses....
I doubt anyone now wants to fire Tom Crean....but it goes to show how fickle fans can be....

Hope Indiana isn't like Bradley. We fire a coach with a 32-3 record.

Possibly...but I would be very surprised...
He has Vandy in 3rd place right behind Kentucky - who they just knocked off
His salary of over $2.2 mil would make for a hard buyout

There is 0% chance of that.

Paul Lusk is staying - so it looks like no MVC coach is still on the hot seat...
Hinson & Simmons had good enough years to silence doubters, both Wardle & Giacoletti are still too new to expect a change, and the rest had decent enough years to hold on.

Here's an interesting take on Oklahoma State with a mention of not just Gregg Marshall replacing Travis Ford - but also Rick Pitino, Kelvin Sampson, and even CBSSports analyst Doug Gottlieb who has never coached any team anywhere in his life!
Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self, who directed his Jayhawks to a 12th-straight Big 12 title and 27-4 regular-season record, on Tuesday was named national coach of the year by USA Today. “This is likely Self’s best coaching job yet, despite all those other league titles and the team that won it all in 2008,” […]
