Northern Kentucky to join Horizon League

The Horizon League has played the last 3 years with only 9 teams, since Butler and Loyola left in 2012 and 2013 to join the Big East & MVC. They added Oakland in 2013 to replace Butler, and now the League has accepted Northern Kentucky University to get back to 10 teams. All that is left is for NKU Board to vote to accept the move.

The new Horizon League will consist of 2 private schools (Valparaiso & Detroit), and 8 public schools (Green Bay, Cleveland State, Oakland, Milwaukee, UIC, Wright State, Youngstown State, and NKU).

interesting perspective from an A-Sun member school....
Northern Kentucky was given special considerations and concession to lure them into the A-Sun - and now they are leaving two years later to jump to a "higher conference" that completely favors them and jilts the entire rest of the A-Sun - leaving some bad tastes...along with some sudden scheduling problems...

anyone else see FGCU (which currently does not have FB) as a possible nice addition some day to the MVC if we want to expand the conference to warm weather locales...?

No way. Travel costs would be atrocious. Could you imagine going to Fort Meyers, FL for a Tuesday night volleyball game? The cost of travel for non revenue sports is already out of sight. No need to make it worse. If Ken Kavanaugh wasn't the AD, it wouldn't even be a thought.

Northern Kentucky is certainly going to a stronger conference than the one they are leaving (Atlantic Sun) and reducing travel should save a lot of money.

There's some interesting speculation that maybe Toledo is looking to join the Horizon League...?

there's nothing official - and it might all just be coincidence....
but Toledo's non-conference schedule isn't even finished yet and it already has FIVE Horizon League teams on it.
