  • Great article on why kids should choose midmajors

    Sports Illustrated's Mike DeCourcy
"Might there be more Steph Currys and Damian Lillards if fewer players worried about playing in most prominent league"

I seems logical to me. Another great story is one of the stand-out players in the NBA postseason, Jimmy Butler. He didn't get any D1 interest in high school even though he was a qualifier and had a pretty good senior season at Tomball High School (19.9 ppg). He went to a Tyler junior college. He developed into a pretty good juco player his first year, but he was still only rated 2-stars and was not a juco All American.
He got a scholarship to Marquette, and a lot of people thought Buzz Williams was crazy. His first season at Marquette he averaged just 5.6 ppg and 3.9 rpg.
He improved his junior season, and as a starter his senior season he averaged 15.7 ppg and was Honorable Mention All Big East.
Then he impressed people at predraft workouts in 2011, and was picked by the Bulls in the first round with pick #30 (the last pick in the 1st round). People thought the Bulls were crazy. How many Honorable Mention All Conference kids get drafted in the NBA Draft 1st round? He only averaged 2.6 ppg his rookie season, but is now averaging 24.1 ppg in the postseason for the Bulls (he averaged a team-leading 20.0 ppg during the regular season).
Now he is an All Star and playing like an MVP for the Bulls.
His choice to go to a juco and develop his skills seems to have paid off.
