  • Curious change in press coverage

It's fairly telling to observe how little the Pjstar reporters have had to say as all the changes have been announced at BU. Seems to pale in comparison to the previous flow of commentary from Wessler etc alluding to what he knew and the odd apparent coziness that existed with senior sources at BU. Has the pipeline dried up with impending departures ?

I don't know??¦??¦??¦seems like we over think the press coverage here. It's been a little different for each coach hasn't it? Probably the same way all over the country when teams change coaches

I am actually fine if the coach does not try to befriend and cozy up to the media. I believe we'll see better and more objective coverage.

Agree on the idea of the coaching staff having a healthy distance from the press.

I was more referencing the information that seemed to be emerging from the BU admin to the press to frame the JL era the way that suited the admin......and the parade of happy talk and misinformation as the GF era launched and beyond.

just wanted to take a sec and publicly say thanks to our poster Bravesfanchicago, who doesn't post much but whose input between last summer & fall (2014 with all the shocking financial reports and info on Board proceedings) and this spring was absolutely instrumental in both revealing info that opened the eyes of our Board and for posting facts that finally helped other fans see what was going on that even our Board was NOT seeing and how BU was headed not just in the wrong direction but literally down the drain under then admin & AD.
I know Bravesfanchicago took some heat from doubters - especially when he tried to post on the pro-JG PJS board - and got accused of being someone else endlessly by those who never want to face facts...but his input helped us get where we are currently and headed in the right direction.

            Curious Change in Press Coverage

Again...I do not understand Kirk Wesslers lack of any writing, commentary, etc. regarding Bradley Basketball. Clearly, he has been totally miffed at the changes that were made at Bradley. He refused to comment on the terrible situation with JG, MC, and Ford. He dodged any semblance of journalistic responsibility as did the PJS. And now, his avoidance of any writing regarding the changes at BU, the basketball team or coaches is not only strange, it questions his competence as a sports editor. IMO the PJS should step in and determine if KW should be replaced since he is obviously not serving the sports informational needs of Central Illinois with his total disregard of the #1 sports interest in this city and area. Dick Lien must be turning over in his grave!

yeah - all those internal things, the firings, and all the new hirings and even the unique - virtually unheard of rebounding of the BU basketball program -
all this has come and gone without much notice or comment from the PJ Star.

Nobody at PJS ever once did their homework and reported on the unprecedented, unsustainable, irresponsible overspending in Athletics that were the main cause of the massive housecleaning.

It's obvious that PJS made a conscious decision to look the other way with all those problems, simply accept the phony line about the whole thing being caused by lower enrollments and that everyone was doing a great job, without actually checking the facts and report only what they had to report to avoid being scooped by the national media.

One last thing- the HOOPS! section to the PJS has always been out in the middle of the 2nd week in November - so we ought to have more by next Wednesday.
I agree we haven't had much at all with some of the only comments from both Dave & Kirk being - "it's too early to tell - I can't comment because we just haven't had enough opportunity to evaluate.."
Kirk was asked in his Sept. Q&A to comment on BU basketball and he deferred...
"I have zero on which to base a prediction. Maybe after I see how they do in the exhibitions.
              ....I try to withhold judgment...."
              ..but still nothing...maybe next week...

I was simply providing some observations on the financial condition of BU. In hindsight it appears the information was intentionally segregated to prevent a comprehensive understanding of the big negative picture.

My only ongoing fear is the repair time needed to correct the financial footing, academic and faculty dislocation and reputational harm done. I thought the JG era was going to be a lost decade. It may take longer than a decade to recover.

Reynolds and the new Prez are pros. The right decisions for the right reasons will be made.

We are all different. I cancelled my subscription 4+ years ago and never read the PJ Star anymore (like a lot of people), except when they post something online that is relevant to my interest in Bradley basketball. I have not missed it one bit.

But surely you have noticed that before the last coach had coached his first game, they had posted numerous articles about the new coach, the new players and recruits, and hyped everything about the program and the way they were doing everything "the right way". Yet we now all know how wrong they were.
And now, despite having access to the team that none of us will ever have, they barely mention what is going on with Bradley basketball. So be it. Just more reasons for readers to drop their subscriptions and ignore them.

Yeah...you are right, we are all different. I guess it just doesn't bother me what they write or don't write about that much.

Do you think lack of attention bothers CR or BW? I would think if they thought there should be more articles about the team they could certainly request it.....

I don't know if it bothers them much. Most coaches and ADs would prefer more publicity rather than less. I do know that the drastic change is noticed by them and everyone.

at least 300 of the 350 DI teams have a devoted "beat writer" who covers their "home town" DI basketball team.

We actually are one of those teams - so why shouldn't we want & expect some coverage - maybe a little something above & beyond what's literally already fully known on the street and all over the internet.

The team is new, interesting, and drawing remarkably BIG interest and crowds already (Itoo, Tradition Banquet, Auction, etc.) so how come no coverage?
                            Here's just a couple examples-
Even tho ISU still has football drawing gobs of interest - their guy has written a dozen ISU & MVC related basketball columns in the past month or so.
We're a big city with a big time DI program and 2nd rate coverage unless he's got a mancrush on the coach.

and I woulda thought if I were a sports columnist or reporter and gobs of fans were saying..
"I would love to see more of your coverage - can't get enough on Bradley basketball and you even promised you'd write more once you had seen them."
...then I'd be in 7th heaven!!

You have just cited the worst thing any journalist would ever fear hearing.
That their own readers don't care and have never cared what they write.
                              We miss you Coach Buescher
