  • Mark Cuban comments on college basketball

    Herer's just some...
"It's horrible. It's ridiculous," Cuban said. "It's worse than high school.
You've got 20 to 25 seconds of passing on the perimeter and then somebody
goes and tries to make a play and do something stupid, and scoring's gone down.
"The referees couldn't manage a White Castle. Seriously, the college game is
more physical than the NBA game, and the variation in how it's called from
game to game [is a problem]. Hell, they don't even have standards on balls.
They use different balls. One team's got one ball, the other team's got
another ball. There are so many things that are ridiculous."
    [??¦]
"If they want to keep kids in school and keep them from being pro players,
they're doing it the exact right way by having the 35-second shot clock and
having the game look and officiated the way it is," Cuban said Wednesday
night. "Just because kids don't know how to play a full game of basketball.

"You've got three kids passing on the perimeter. With 10 seconds on the
shot clock, they try to make something happen and two other kids stand
around. They don't look for anything and then run back on defense, so
there's no transition game because two out of five or three out of five or in
some cases four out of five kids aren't involved in the play.???
Cuban went on to call NCAA ball ???uglier than ugly??? .."

and he's not the only one...

Now that March Madness has come to an end, I would like to reflect on how maddening the tournament actually was, and why college basketball is turning into an unflattering product. Upsets are a hug…

My biggest problems is all of the timeouts, especially at the end of a game. I say give em one per half that doesn't carry over.

TV games have a lot of timeouts because of TV commercials.. Money is dictating the game in a lot of ways..when to play ..when they take timeouts..how long the timeouts are

After the 4 minute mark the tv timeouts are over. The rest are all coaches trying to be coaches and the game drags on and on.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

But in some games there are numerous long stoppages in the final couple minutes for the refs to huddle or review the videos because of the final 2 minute video review rule -
then as we saw - they still don't always get it right...

Whether the game is televised or not has nothing to do with the number of timeouts. There are media timeouts, every four minutes, whether the game is televised of not. They occur at 16:00, 12:00, 8:00 & 4:00 of the first half and the same during the second half. If the game isn't on television, the timeouts are the same.

As much as we all like college basketball, Mark Cuban is right. That is why television ratings are down. It is not fans like us the NCAA is losing. It's the casual fans they are losing. The games take way too long and the final few minutes can take for ever. Low scoring games are like watching paint dry.

Honestly, what can you say about his comments. The guy owns a Professional basketball team, so is it really an unbiased opinion? Either way, the NBA is the worst officiating in the universe, so not sure what point he's trying to make.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

I can't watch the NBA. The way the NBA game has become and the way it's officiated turned me off a long time ago. Sure, I'd like to see more teams run a more uptempo offense, but you work with what you have. The NBA has the best of the best while many college teams don't have the athleticism or depth to play certain styles because there are 350+ teams giving out 13 scholarships and competing for resources.

And anyone that wants to turn the college game into the pro game is making a huge mistake. That would push a lot of college fans away.
