  • Brace for more bad news

Much has been happening this week since Coach Wardle got back from Indianapolis, and he laid down a whole set of new team rules, and there are many changes from the past staff's rules.
I'm hearing that some of the remaining players are not happy, and there are some who are thinking about leaving.
I just heard that Donte Thomas may be one of them who is considering leaving.

Wow.....that would be a major blow to next season in my book!

we need a team of players who will embrace discipline and follow rules...but to me the BAD NEWS is that apparently we do not have anything of the kind at the present and haven't for at least four years...

I don't see this as bad news at all. Anyone who is scared off by hard work and discipline has no place on the team as far as I'm concerned.

All I can say is that there are some issues that are somewhat unique. It may not always help to cut off your nose to spite your face.

Are we even going to have 5 scholarship players to put on the court at the same time next year?

Meh. Hey, it isn't as if this team can possibly do any worse this season than last season. Let them leave; that leaves more scholarships so that the season 3 years from now can be better.

It may not always help, but in this case I think it does. We may not be competitive next year, but in the long run as long as we are moving forward I'm all for a clean house. The sooner these guys are gone, the better.

That is how I see it. We had a "hug the students, hug the players" administration and it didn't work.

I would have to agree. I don't know all of the details and I don't pretend to. I have been told but don't know if it's accurate, that academic help from the tutor had been pulled from the players that had already announced they were leaving. So much for going to school for the education if this is true.

I wouldn't be too concerned about upsetting the relationship with the Chicago Fire AAU team. I would be concerned if it turned out to be detrimental to the relationship of the Chicago Public League coaches. The coaches of the Chicago Public League have a very tight fraternity. There will be some that will say we don't need the public league players. That's what DePaul thought and it has destroyed their program for 30 years.

I'm not saying it's going to happen here, and once again, I don't know all the facts. I do know it is very hard to be a team from Illinois and be successful, on a regular basis, if you don't have good relations with the Chicago coaches. Let's hope that won't turn out to be the case.

+1 -- I am completely fine with getting rid of any of these guys-- a clean house--and if we are not competitive next year--so be it. I really am not excited about any 5th year seniors either for a short term band-aid fix-- I hope we get some freshmen on board who will buy in to Coach Wardle's plan and build around them for our future and am willing to be patient.
                      Bradley football--undefeated again this year

I don't know if this is true. But my understanding is this:
                        1. the athletic department has to reduce its budget.

                        2. the *athletic* tutoring is supposed to be there because players are doing extra practices, games, etc. and therefore have a harder time making things like professor's office hours.

So if they are no longer on the team, why do they need special tutoring? They are still BU students and they still have the other tutoring services that regular students have (e. g. via the Learning Assistance Center), professor's office hours, etc. and now they have the time to use such things.

                          Nailed it.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Agreed. And if they need to work out, then there is a fitness center that the rest of the student body has access to.

It is usually customary for departing players to still be given courtesy use of facilities for working out and to have access to the tutors and academic support people. After all, their grades could end up impacting Bradley's APR score.
It is not typical to cut those players off completely and ruffle feathers. Some of the players who were planning on returning may have wanted to work out together with the departing players, as they have been workout partners for a long time. I am not judging, only reporting what I have heard. If anyone hears differently, please post. All of those kids who are leaving want to stay in shape and keep their grades up to find the best destination for them after this semester. Their AAU people, families, and HS coaches want that too. All I am saying is that there are different ways of handling this kind of thing that doesn't cause dissention with the kids, families, AAU sponsors, and the high school coaches. Maybe that is why most coaches do it differently.
