  • Gregg Marshall

There are reports late Sunday that Alabama has offered Gregg Marshall a huge contract offer with reports ranging from $3 million to $5 million per year.

Texas is also in the bidding war, and some reports suggest Marshall would prefer that job, but reports are that Texas is not willing to go that high.

Some Texas media are reporting that Texas is actually targeting Shaka Smart, who is interested in the job.
The coach that reportedly turned down Alabama may not be the top target for the job he is reported to be most interest in. Texas is targeting VCU’s Shaka Smart, not Wichita State’s Greg…

And yet other media is reporting that Tennessee is pursuing Shaka Smart.

It will be interesting to see what Marshall does. He really can't do anything else at Wichita, other than win a National Championship. I'd be surprised if he stayed in Wichita. Coaches like players like challenges and he is just getting into his prime.

      More conflicting reports this morning-

Several reports over the weekend said that Gregg Marshall told Alabama he wasn't interested in their job, and wanted the Texas job-

But then CBS Sports reported that Marshall "shocked" to read reports that he has no interest in Alabama.

But this morning, new reports suggest Marshall is still talking to Alabama, and Alabama is offing big money-

Seems to me he would be a better fit at Texas......

I hope he stays at Wichita State. The Missouri Valley needs more consistency in their coaches. Every time you get a new coach the program has to start over. A lot of your successful programs have coaches that stay there

I would think Alabama would be a better fit. There would be less pressure at Alabama, as opposed to Texas, although both would pay a lot more money than Wichita. Texas has had much more success in basketball than Alabama and the expectations are much higher at Texas.

No matter where he goes, he more than likely will have success. To be successful at Alabama requires less than to be successful at Texas.

The pressure of coaching the basketball team at either school is nowhere near the pressure of coaching the football teams.

That's true, but he seems like the type that would want to be the big team on campus. That will never happen in Austin or Tuscaloosa, regardless of the success with basketball, much like Florida basketball and their two titles. Maybe i'm wrong, and he values the easy-going nature of basketball fandom there, i'm not sure. I just feel like he would prefer to wait for a bigger job (irregardless of money). A Louisville, a Kentucky, a Kansas, etc. Much like Shaka Smart, it's not like him declining these jobs will cancel him out from future openings. I mean, Shaka has been linked to jobs since the UI job came open...3ish years ago?

Who knows, but it's interesting to watch from the MVC's perspective. I hope he stays personally. I love having notoriety brought to the Valley, especially in March.

The Wichita message boards are already discussing who they'd hire to replace Gregg Marshall should he bolt for the Texas or Alabama job...

in case anyone is interested - here are some of the names people mention...

Greg Lansing, Archie Miller (Dayton coach), Chris Jans, Brad Underwood, Tad Boyle, Anthony Grant, Rick Barnes was mentioned but he's already hired at Tennessee, Shaka Smart, Bobby Hurley - even a mention of Wardle & Ben Jacobson...

I'm sure the AD's, including CR, appreciate all the help they get when hiring a new coach. Like they never heard of these guys before.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

It sounds like Texas may have given up on Marshall, and is now focusing on Shaka Smart. The Texas AD is flying Smart back to Austin to stuff a boatload of money into his pocket hoping to persuade him to take the Texas job.

2 hours ago it was being widely reported that Gragg Marshall was planning on making a trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Friday, to listen to Alabama's best offer.

But now it seems he has reached a new 7-year agreement with Wichita State to remain at WSU.

And he is cancelling his trip to Tuscaloosa.

Will Bradley ever be able to compete with Wichita? It will be a few years before we can look down on the bottom half of the league.

Marshall's new deal with Wichita State will pay him $3.3 million per year for the next 7 years.

That is more than $2.5 million per year more than any other coach in the MVC.
