I talked to Willie at the State Tournament and he was very optimistic he was going to land a job. He said he had several options that he felt could lead to a head job and it looks like he landed one. Congrats Willie and best of luck at William Penn.

Willie Scott took over last summer as the head coach at NAIA William Penn University for their women's team. He took over a weak program that had back to back losing seasons, and won only 4 of their conference games last season. Willie is a great coach, and is having some success immediately in improving the team. His team has already won as many conference games this season as they did all last year (4), and they still have 14 more to play. They are 7-8 overall, but continuing to improve. I hear he is just as hard a worker as he has been at all his previous coaching jobs, and spends all his free time recruiting to make his team better.
          Good luck to Willie.
I believe he will be back coaching at a Division I school before too long. He'd look good back here at Bradley!

BTW, for those who don't know, Willie was hired as an assistant under Jim Les in his final season, and stayed on Geno Ford's staff for Geno's first season. He was a finalist for the BU women's head coaching job in 2012 to replace Paula Buscher. The job went to Mike Brooks, and Willie then was forced to leave Bradley to help take care of his ailing mother. But I know he still loves Bradley and would love to return in some capacity.

Willie Scott has had success already in his short time as the women's coach at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. With essentially the same players who won only 11 games total last season and only 4 conference games, Willie has his team in a new and better conference this year (5 of the teams in the Heart of America Conference are ranked in the top 30 teams in NAIA), and they upset one of the top teams last night to go to 12-12 overall and they are 9-8 in the conference. They are now in 6th place by themselves (out of 12 teams), right behind the 5 ranked teams.
I ran into Willie a week ago while he was in Peoria, He is spending a lot of time recruiting in Chicago, East Peoria (ICC), Wisconsin, and Iowa to make his team better. I have no doubt he will. Congratulations, Willie!

Followup on Willie Scott's first year of coaching the women's basketball team at William Penn University (Oskaloosa, Iowa)-

As noted above, he took over a very poor team, with no shooters, no size, and no point guard. He was hired too late to do any effective recruiting, so he had to make do with the players returning. There are 5 really good teams in his conference (all are nationally ranked or receive votes for the NAIA Top 25) that are difficult for any of the lower teams to beat. And although Willie's team did upset one of those top teams, almost all their losses have come to those top teams. They are currently 13-16 overall, and 10-12 in their conference. They tied for 6th place in the Heart of America Conference (a much tougher conference than they were in last season) behind the top 5 nationally ranked teams. Their regular season is now over, and they start play in their conference tournament on Tuesday against a team they have already beaten twice. Good luck Willie!

One more note- Although the Coach of the Year award, voted for by all the coaches, went to the coach of the top team, Willie did receive votes for Coach of the Year for his tremendous job of turning the William Penn program around in his first season with a limited roster. That is a tremendous honor from his peers who recognize the great job he did. And his name is already coming up in relation to other jobs that may open. I also know he has been relentless with his recruiting efforts all over the midwest, so expect him to have an even better team next season.

If the Bradley job ever opens, I hope Willie applies and gets consideration from our administration. He'd be great for Bradley, and he'd have tremendous support from the Bradley fans, and I think he'd have tremendous success.

Willie Scott & William Penn won their first round playoff game last night with a HUGE 60-38 win
They now play at 7pm Thursday vs. MidAmerica Nazarene

Willie's team plays a crisp-passing style that always gets people open...and tough defense...
his team shot 16% point better than the opponents and eight different players recorded assists and his ladies outrebounded their opponents 57-26!

Willie still does not have the athletes to compete with the top teams in his conference. MidAmerica Nazarene is the #9 ranked NAIA team in the country, and the #2 seed in the conference. He has improved his team dramatically with his coaching, but he will need to rebuild more to be competitive with the top teams.

The upcoming opponent is led by Megan Balcom who has attempted 217 3-pt shots already this season and has been the difference in the two games Willie has lost to them. Hope he can shut her down.

Sarah Hansen also lead the country in 3-pointers made per game- almost 5 made per game. Willie did not have anyone on his team that he inherited who could make three pointers. As a team they only averaged 3 per game, and they shot 23%. I hear he may also land one of the top ICC girls.

                            Go Willie -
if a player can make 4 or 5 3-pointers per game - then it drastically changes the way other teams must guard you and opens up a ton of options inside.

I would love to see Willie get the necessary experience and achieve the level of success that might position him for a future coaching position at BU. Willie's one of the good guys, and Bradley and their fans owe him a debt of gratitude for his loyalty during the transition from Les to Ford.
