  • Jim Calhoun?

    Prob. wouldn't be interested...but.....
The ex-head coach of UConn - Jim Calhoun just hinted on ESPN that he'd be open to return to coaching....
he said the same thing last year - "the situation would have to be right"...

".. if something special came along, I feel I still have enough zip, power and certainly love for the game, love for competition,
that I'd do it. But it'd have to be the right situation for me and for that school."

He certainly knows how to coach, would he be accepted??

He'd be accepted by me. That is a huge name in coaching! I can't imagine he'd take a head coaching position at Bradley for what we're likely able to pay our next coach thanks to the current financial situation we're in. If he was willing, that would be a wow signing.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

I didn't think we wanted anyone from the east coast.......they don't "get" Peoria

You're always such a charming and pleasant guy, Lefty. I don't know when I said anything like that personally, but even assuming someone did, there are always exceptions, and Jim Calhoun would certainly fall under that umbrella.

I don't know if you did or not really....but it's been brought up a number of times about having Midwest roots though and understanding Peoria and Bradley tradition...so I was kind of giving the post a hard time.....

Seriously though...Calhoun will be 73 in May...he's had some health problems and his program was guilty of some violations.......just seems like there is too much there to overcome to give a guy a 5 year contract

He would not be interested in the Bradley job, and BU couldn't afford him.

Bradley is a job for a young man that has a lot of energy. We also don't need somebody wit a history of NCAA violations. Might as well hire Bruce Pearl.

I just wouldn't go shopping out east when there are better candidates in the midwest...
but can't think of many National Championship caliber guys waiting for a call nearby, do you?
He might get our program quickly back to respectability in the case we might need to be appealing when conferences realign..

Absolutely true and fair assessment. And by no means did I mean to imply that Calhoun would be my personal 1st choice overall. I would not be disappointed if he were the one to get the job is all I was saying. He's got a history of winning and his name recognition would certainly help with recruiting.

Like DaCoach said though, there's no way it's happening, so it's probably not even worth discussing.

For the record - my preference is for a young up and comer coach, preferably someone with assistant coaching experience in the Big 10, but I'd be ok with the ACC, as well.

None of that is to imply that if anything but that happens it would leave me disappointed. I truly do trust our new AD to make a great decision, and the only thing that will make me question his decision making is if Geno is still our HC at the beginning of next season.

BU needs someone with some serious recruiting chops, or someone who can bring with him some assistants who have a track record of finding players.

Bradley will not be able to get a big name coach for its next men's basketball coach. It is not that high profile of a job. There will always be better jobs available in a better conference, for the big name coaches.

When the time comes for the new athletic director to hire a new men's basketball coach, I trust him in making that decision. He has been around enough good coaches and has forgotten more about what makes a good basketball coach, than anybody on this message board knows.

He will make his decision in a professional, well thought out manner, that will work in the best long term interest of Bradley basketball. We all just need to relax and let him do his job as he sees fit. After all, that is why he was hired.

I am not sure a big name coach would be better. They may rely on their name to much. A good assistant would be hungrier wanting to make a name for himself so may work harder

Re: Calhoun - just thinking he might be able to do for Bradley what Larry Brown has done in very short time for SMU
I do not think it is the same as seeking out Bruce Pearl or Kelvin Sampson before their sanctions even expire.

Jim Calhoun has given a lot of his time (although I suspect he was remunerated) for efforts to develop basketball all over the world, as well as other charitable efforts.
After struggling for many years to build a successful basketball program, The University of Connecticut basketball program decided to hire Jim Calhoun as its new coach on May 14, 1986. At the time, the university was hoping they made the right choice but little did they know that two and half decades later, Calhoun would...

Former UConn head coach Jim Calhoun and a few former players helped distribute 500 turkeys and holiday meal fixings to families in need at Calhoun’s annual food drive at Pope Park in Hartford…
