If I knew that, I guess I forgot
The Citadel, Army, St Francis(NY) and William & Mary are the other Division 1 schools never to appear(EDIT-should have said among the original Division 1 "Charter" schools...thanks to tornado for the correction below)....and St Francis has a chance to get in this season
Northwestern is the only 'Power 5 conference' school to never be in the NCAA tourney.
Which reminds me of a Bradley Basketball recruiting story
In 1960, Bradley tried very hard to recruit a player who arguably is the best ever Northwestern BB player =Rich Falk from Galva, Ill (see link at bottom of post)....Falk is still one of the all time leading scorers in Illinois HS bb history
I know this for a fact because my Dad(a BU alum) was involved in the recruitment.
Every time that our family visited my uncle(my Dad's brother) in Rock Island, my Dad picked up the phone and called Falk. My Dad was trying to convince Rich(who later would become the Northwestern head basketball coach) to come to Bradley. I remember(I was 8 at the time) that those conversations lasted awhile....so I assumed my dad was making headway.
Only recently when I looked at a map did I notice that Galva is almost as close to Peoria as it is to Rock Island....We lived in Peoria....why did my dad wait until he got to Rock Island to call Falk?....maybe to stick his older brother with the long distance bill?
At the time my dad had high hopes that Falk would come to Bradley. The only schools that he was worried about (IIRC) were Iowa and Notre Dame(because Falk was also an All State QB)....never heard anything about Northwestern
It turns out Falk's Uncle Ernie was an Associate Athletic Director at NW. That was the 'in' that Northwestern needed to seal the deal.
My dad was highly disappointed(and I assume the Bradley coaches were too)
Others who helped with Falk's NW recruitment(or at least I was told were involved)
Head NW Football Coach Ara Parseghian
NW Football player Irv Cross (later of CBS NFL coverage fame)
NW Student sports writer Brent Musberger
another NW Associate AD and pal of 'Uncle Ernie' =McClean Stevenson(later of TV MASH fame)
NW also had a co-ed named Ann-Margret at the time(no info on whether she helped recruit during her undergrad days....)
