That era was a time when the NCAA really wanted to flex their muscles. It was in just a couple years later, when the NCAA gave SMU the death penalty for football violations. The NCAA saw how devastating that was to the entire Dallas area, from an economic standpoint, and has not given a school the death penalty since.
The NCAA has had a history of chasing certain coaches. Dale Brown at LSU and Jerry Tarkanian at Hawaii, Long Beach State and UNLV is another. They got Tarkanian a couple times but I don't think they got Dale Brown.
They did reprimand Brown for giving a player money for a plane ticket to go visit his teammate/roommate, who was on his death bed dying from cancer.
The kid had no money for a plane ticket and his friend had requested him for him to visit before he died. When Brown was asked by the NCAA if he gave the kid money for the plane ticket he said, "You're **** right I did and I'd do it again". The kid died shortly after the visit.
