and I know it isn't easy to recruit nor win at every institution - but almost all the shortcomings like facilities, budget, and getting Chicago connections & players supposedly have been fixed..
...so if this is the best this staff can do - and we saw during the 32-game season that we never got any better - if anything, we got WORSE the more the players were coached by this staff...
Their scoring production went down, Omari Grier-Warren Jones-Auston Barnes-Mike Shaw - all went from starter & go-to-guy to sub to almost useless for long stretches late in the season.
The only bright spots were the discovery of a 4th year player on the end of the bench that got more cheers than everyone else combined - and a single "fortunate" 52-50 OT win in the play-in round vs. a team that played its worst game of the year.
you follow Drake close enough to declare that was their worst game of the year?
LOL - no .. but a myriad of Drake fans who follow their team as close as I follow Bradley seem to think so...
..plus there's a few more on the Valleytalk-repo
One guy lamented at the prospect of overtime - oh no, 5 more minutes of this?
and another guy said it was the most painful Drake game he has EVER watched
and one more said, "That was straight up brutal.
Getting only 17pts in 1st half against a last place team? Losing to a team firing their coach tomorrow? Losing to a team resembling MASH unit and an absolute grease fire in morale?
..Whatever there had been to build on during the regular season felt like it was cancelled tonight"
Geno may very well be a great guy and family man, and I wish him well wherever he goes.
Here are some facts to remember:
1) We're Bradley fans and root for Bradley to win basketball games
2) Bradley has not won many basketball games since Geno came to town
3) Geno is a multi-millionaire, so let's not get too carried away feeling sorry for the guy
I'm sure the emotional strain on Geno has been tough this year, and failing at something while being beat up by the fan base would take a toll on anyone. When you take a job in a high visibility job like this, that is something you know you may have to deal with at some point. It's disappointing and at the same time, not surprising.
Good luck, Geno. I hope you have great success in life as a human being, and that doesn't necessarily have to be as a basketball coach. I am however glad that we will not have you as the head coach of the basketball team I love for another year.
Larry Bird
I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Very well said. .I agree completely on all points!
it was you who asked the question if I was qualified to determine whether they played a bad game,
I answered and now I am simply asking you the exact same question
... let's not get too carried away feeling sorry for the guy....
I do feel for Geno - and I have said all along that a lot of the hurdles he faced in getting a winning team were not of his own doing...
but go back and read the thread about our last coach being fired - not too many people shed tears then...

Got it.....you had already responded to my question so I thought your question had some thing to do with the article after my post...
But since you asked...it was a bad game played by two bad teams where the team who played the least bad won
I just doubt it was Drake's worse game of the season...that's all.

Coaches don't like to fail...no amount of money makes them feel better and from the sounds of the post game show it has and will be a huge emotional strain on Geno and the family. Having some empathy and compassion for someone isn't getting "too carried away"

here's yet another thought on why it is their worst loss
-they finished two games behind Loyola and were swept by Loyola in the 2 head-to-head meetings
Thus they'd have had to win THREE games that they otherwise lost just to even have a shot at getting out of Thursday - so I reason that no game nor even no TWO games would have made any difference all year long, they would have still finished 7th and gotten Bradley.
But the loss of 7th seeded Drake to 10th seeded Bradley Thursday finished their year, added humiliation to their loss, and even has to hurt a little in going out now on the recruiting trail...plus - as I said - it invoked more "mea culpas" and condemnation from their fan base on DrakeNation.com - even a few coments questioning if the Giacoletti hire was the right move or are they right back where they were with Phelps?
So - yes, I'd say I am convinced it was their worst game and at the worst time.
BUT -- even if I agree with you that it MIGHT NOT have been their worst game - it doesn't take away from my argument that a win over such a team at the bottom of the MVC playing a bad game is hardly anything for long time BU fans to be comforted over and point to as one of the season's bright spots.
If it is a "bright spot" in 2014-15 for anyone then your standards of success have sunk light years from when getting 4th place was worthy of canning a coach.
I do feel sorry for him. He puts in crazy hours and works his butt off, the results just aren't there. And then even when they win it is qualified in some circles with excuses as to why they shouldn't be happy for getting the win. I felt the same way about the previous coach. Losses are put on the coach, wins are put on the other team being bad. It's a no win situation. Has to be draining.
