  • Unusual Senior Day starting lineup

Sometimes coaches will start seniors who don't usually start on their Senior Day, but here is a much more unusual starting lineup-
Oregon State has had a modestly successful season under 1st year Head Coach Wayne Tinkle. The Beavers have already won as many Pac-12 games as any coach at Oregon State has won in 22 years.
But his team does not have any seniors. So on Senior Night, he started a highly unusual lineup- 5 walk-on players.
The walk-ons only played a less than a minute, and the visiting Oregon team raced out to an 8-0 lead. But then it seemed to inspire the OSU team, and their regulars came back to take an 8 point lead, before an Oregon surge tied it 32-32 at halftime.

But the box score looks strange as none of the starters have a single point, assist, or rebound-
Box score for the Oregon Ducks vs. Oregon State Beavers NCAAM game from March 4, 2015 on ESPN. Includes all points, rebounds and steals stats.

they lost by three but actually their starters won by 5..
so in doing what he did, he may have sacrificed an NIT bid, and also sacrificed their biggest rivalry game of the year
    .....wonder what their fans think??
...sure it's a warm heartfelt story, and some will "remember it all of their lives"....but was it fair to those players who had earned the start then lose the game because of this sentimental move?
In this day & age where we let cancer patients score on purpose, or have the defense get out of the way so some kid can run untouched to score a TD - it is a nice story but then why not start the cheerleaders or put the waterboy in the game? There's getting to be a whole lot of these "touching moments" any more.
Comes a point when it's a downright embarrassment that five guys gave up an 8-0 start to the game in just ONE MINUTE!!!

I'm not seeing anyone who seemed bothered by it, and it's doubtful it caused them to lose. They were overmatched by Oregon, and they actually played their best right after the walkons came out. It might have inspired them to keep the game close.
Wayne Tinkle took over the Oregon State program from Craig Robinson, who essentially left the cupboard bare. Robinson should have been fired a couple years earlier than he was, but likely politics made it hard for OSU to pull the plug on his miserable 6 year tenure (only 1 winning season, and never came close to a winning Pac 12 record). Tinkle has done a great job with the limited talent he inherited and a few good recruits he landed. But he has an extremely strong recruiting class for next year, which means those walkons probably won't be back next season.
Oregon State was picked a distant 12th in the preseason Pac 12 poll, but they finished in 6th place.

Head Coach Wayne Tinkle is a little freer to do what he wants without fear of backlash....
his security blanket arrives next year and stays for four more...
his son is one of the top players in the nation and has signed to play at Oregon State along with some other good players

Also this story got him and Oregon State more positive publicity then winning the game would have gotten. Good for him and watch him to have that program turned around soon. There is talent and he has big west coast ties.
