    pJ Star prints......

Chico.....You make a great point which needs answering. Was the weed in the car his or did it belong to someone else. I think JH needs to answer and clarify this and do it soon.

You have my stance half right - I do expect kids to be disciplined strongly but rarely ever see it happen but..
I have always said people deserve a 2nd chance - and I am sure you cannot ever find a single time that I said such a minor offense should result in permanent banning of someone---
and what harsher punishment can Jerrance suffer than to have the entire national media run with hit pieces against you for such a minor offense then have it quite possibly torpedo your chance of ever becoming what you've strived to be ( a head coach) your entire life?
So, no, my position has not changed.

If this was SIU, I would be less concerned about the pot issue than I would the fact that he "forgot" to notify his current employer. If he told KU about this the day after it happened, he serves a 2 week suspension to start the season at worst. People screw up, as far as offenses go, this ranks just above forgetting to pay parking tickets. Working for a top 5 division 1 program and hoping to eventually be a division 1 head coach, you have to know this will eventually be discovered. So that means that he is shady enough to think he can hide this, dumb enough to think no one will find out, or worst case scenario he is both dub and shady.

Eventually he is going to get his chance to be a HC but short-term he really damaged his chances and only because he wasn't completely honest.

well, I'll bet 95% of people who get ticketed - even those ticketed for minor drug offenses
DO NOT tell their boss or employer....and just naively assume it'll never come to light.
I really can't get too hard on Jerrance - once in his entire life he gets a minor drug citation,
then pays his debt to society, gets past the supervision - now have to suffer all over again because of a media vendetta
I think he's more than paid his debt for such a minimal offense -
personally I believe a DUI or an arrest for selling drugs is way worse...

BTW - I suspect you know that one of the SIU guys, Ryan Hare, was arrested for an underage booze incident, then literally appeared in a game that very same day he faced the judge just a couple hours earlier to have his charges read to him!
..and none of it was ever revealed or made public and Hare never missed a minute of a single game and played all 31 games plus exhibitions that year.
...and same with Diamond Taylor - who had a cannabis arrest and apparently never told Lowery because he played several successive games until he ran into more trouble.
I feel bad for the teams and those kids, but there are countless examples of violators getting zero penalty and they never got a front page PJS writeup!

So an aspiring head coach that is 34 shouldn't be held to higher standards than 18-20 year old kids? Also holding anyone to the Lowery standard is setting the bar pretty low. If you want Bradley to resemble the Lowery era SIU, I'm cool with that.

Lowery was a pretty hot young up-and-coming coach at one time. Enough for SIU to fork over a long term contract at $750,000 a year when virtually no other mid-major coaches in the country were getting that kind of money. I realize he never lived up to expectations after those first 3 seasons, but the people at SIU thought he would when he took the Salukis to 2 regular season MVC titles and 3 straight NCAA tournaments, and an RPI as high as 7.
I think Jerrance will be a successful head coach wherever and whenever he gets the chance. I would have no problem with this incident, as long as he seemed to have learned his lesson. But I wouldn't be surprised if it does stand in his way for a while.

The sooner JH gets in front of the press to address this issue and why he decided not to say anything to his boss for over a year the better it's going to be.

If it derails his career long term, there is something seriously wrong with that. There should be some short term repercussions though.

                    Lowery's standard:
his assistant coach gets a DUI while slamming into someone's front yard, then leaving the scene and it was never even mentioned and got no punishment at all.

So? Lowery was fired and stuff like this in addition to the on court results had a lot to do with it.

I fail to see what a fired head coaches assistant getting a DUI has to do with this situation. The argument that JH is OK because other people have done worse is the kind of argument my kids would make and they are 5 and 9.

It is your prerogative to want to hire a 34 year old with no experience who now has a track record of hiding important information from his bosses but we all know what your reaction would be if GF had a pot arrest last summer and it was just coming out now.

Here's a different, optimistic take on all this. Back when JH's name first surfaced, it was said on this board that he would take the job for a lot less pay than Geno is getting. Something like half, if I recall.

Money is tight on the Hilltop. Now that JH's career might be in "pause mode" because of last summer's incident, he could be a very good head coaching prospect in the bargain bin, maybe for even less than he might have been willing to come in the first place if we offer a fresh start.

This presupposes that he addresses the issue head on and acts to restore confidence in his leadership. But my guess is somebody will be willing to give him that fresh start and second chance. And when they do, he will be a bargain.

I don't know Jerrance but if he wants the Bradley job he needs to offer some very compelling reason that this should not be a disqualifier. I am not sure that is possible especially given the fact that he did not disclose it to Self. It is a shame but I just don't see how we can hire him. I think we would be all over ISU if they hired someone with the same history. In the end actions have consequences and a 34 year old coach is held to a higher standard than a 20 year old player. Just my opinion and I hope he gets past this.

Character matters. Bradley does not need this. Move on.

Why would anybody even want the BU basketball job? The university hasn't even made a public statement saying the head basketball coach has been terminated. It may happen. If it has happened, as some seem to say, would you want to work at a place that has handled it like this? If they do it to the current coach they'll do it to the next. Sounds to me like we need an adult in the room at the BU Board of Trustees meetings. Or betting yet, if the leak has come from a Board of Trustee member, that person should be removed from the Board immediately, in an effort to restore credibility. If there has not been a leak by a Board of Trustee member, a public statement from the Board Chairman needs to be made stating that. This thing has spiraled out of control and facts need to be separated from rumors. The university is losing credibility locally everyday this continues. Even though I am in favor of a change in athletic director and head basketball coach, this is not fair to them, their families and the university's reputation. Terminating people is not a fun thing to do and it is not a "gotcha" moment. It needs to be handled professionally and it does not appear to be, if the things being posted on message boards are accurate.

I have made my preference quite clear-
I want anyone but the people involved in our last search & hiring to bring in someone who is not just some name they came up with by watching TV...
..at this point I will support just about anyone who knows the difference between a zone and a man..
