  • Could Cal Davis be the next Florida Gulf Coast?

Cal Davis is now 19-4, they have more wins and are ranked higher in RPI than any team in the Valley except Wichita and UNI. They have even won their last 3 games without All American candidate Corey Hawkins, who'll be back for their next game.
Could Cal Davis be an NCAA team? Could they upset a 3 or 4 seed? Could lightning strike again like it did with Bradley in 2006, and FGCU in 2013?
Is it just a coincidence that the men who weren't good enough for Bradley have built winners elsewhere out of nothing and with none of the advantages Bradley has with facilities, money, history, tradition, large & loyal fan base, etc.?

There's only 1 bid (as always) coming out of the Big West... The winner of the conference tournament. Let's hope they play their best!

Lets hope Cal Davis can win their Tourney and get in the big dance . That would be quite an accomplishment.

They've been on a couple of the ESPN channels late at night this year, so i've managed to catch a first half or two. It's strange not only seeing Coach Les there, but also a Hawkins on the court. Sort of feels like Deja Vu in a way.

Corey is the real deal though. I just looked up his stats and he's hitting 53% of his threes on 116 attempts! That's incredible, Korver-esque.

UC Davis remains at or near the top of the NCAA in FG% and 3-point percentage-

it was pointed out to me today that if you take UC-Davis' RPI, and add it to FGCU's RPI -- then double that total - you'd have roughly what BU's RPI is....pretty amazing...
and something that had you said that 4 years ago would have gotten you locked up, yet now it is a reality

Remember - Dr. Cross took over at the end of 2009 when we were still in the midst of four consecutive winning seasons of 21 or more wins,
multiple sellouts, near-10,000 average attendance, record donations, the Scholarship society was being capped and closed because it was full and there were no more lower bowl seats to hand out,
and fans were largely happy, hopeful, upbeat, and optimistic - except a few whiners and disgruntled people who apparently caught Dr. Cross' ear and he played to them and look what's happened...
Seriously - what took 100 years to build - the legacy of a great midmajor basketball program - down the drain almost overnight due to horrible moves and bad decisions.
Sorry - I know it's harsh but the truth sometimes is - and Glasser/Cross at the helm have all but ruined what took 100 years to build.

It's no secret I'm not a JH/MC fan, but I got lower bowl season tix after 2010 with zero effort...

Here is a YouTube video of a half-hour TV sports show on a local channel in Sacramento. It is mostly about Sacramento area high school sports, but click ahead to the 17:30 mark and they have a nice 5 minute segment about UC davis basketball and an interview with Coach Jim Les-
Hosts Joe Davidson and Mike Finnerty provide boys and girls basketball highlights with wins by Modesto Christian, Rio Americano, Bella Vista, and Whitney. Fo...

By the way, UC Davis has another national TV game on ESPN3.com this Thursday at Long Beach State (9 PM CST). UC Davis is expected to get the Big West's leading scorer, Corey Hawkins back in their lineup after he missed the last 3 games (which UCD won) with a leg injury.
Btw, there is no truth to the rumor that writers for the Sacramento newspaper are accusing Coach Les of being a liar because he would not reveal for sure whether Corey Hawkins would play or not.
(if any BU fan does not get this sarcastic joke directed at KW, check out this thread from 2007 where Kirk Wessler and a couple clueless posters accused Jim Les of being a liar because he didn't reveal that Daniel Ruffin would miss an upcoming game with an injury-

UC Davis moved up a couple spots to #11 on the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. Note that UNI is #2, and Wichita State is #3. No other MVC came close, though Evansville got a few votes.-

ironic - cuz they stopped taking new members to the BSS in 2008-09 when there were zero available seats in the lower bowl to give them
The lower bowl was completely full just a couple years earlier...now it's virtually barren

I think they re-opened the BSS in the Spring of 2011.

UC-Davis is playing at Long Beach State and really stifling them - leading 25-11 with just 3 min left in 1st half

now 36-18 - Corey Hawkins en fuego

with a win tonight, UC-Davis will have 20 wins with at least 6 more games and likely several more
this is an all time record for them in DI
