Ron Harris Receives Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award
On May 5, 2009, the Bradley University Athletic Department awarded Brother
Ron Harris '56 with the 2009 Orville Nothdurft Lifetime Achievement Award.
A former cross country and track letterwinner, Brother Harris is the ninth
recipient of the Orville Nothdurft Lifetime Achievement Award, which is
presented annually to a former Bradley student-athlete who has achieved
success in their chosen profession and has continued to serve in such a
manner as Ron Harris to bring honor to oneself, Bradley Athletics, and the
University as a whole.
The award is named after Orville Nothdurft '35, a member of the Men's
tennis program during his undergraduate playing days and later a University
administrator who served a lengthy tenure as the Faculty Athletics
Representative. Harris is the fourth Sigma Chi Brother to receive the Orville
Nothdurft Award. Ed King ’54, Corky Robertson ’53 and Clarence Christe ’51
have all previously received this honor.
An Edwardsville, Illinois native, Harris earned his bachelor’s degree in
physical education from Bradley in 1956 and spent the next 20 years as a
teacher and coach. After beginning his coaching career at the high school
level, he returned to The Hilltop in 1965 as the assistant men’s basketball
coach. Following a seven-year stint as the Bradley freshman team coach,
Harris became the first varsity basketball coach in Samford University
history in 1972. He also coached professional basketball in Sweden.
Upon returning to Peoria in the late 1970’s, Brother Harris embarked on a
successful business career and became involved in thoroughbred horse
racing. He also has been a member of the Alumni B-Club letter winners
organization for the past 30 years, serving as the board president for the
past decade. Harris also served a term as president of the Bradley
University national alumni association and he is a past director of the Braves
Club Board.
