I believe there will be only 4 players in this discussion, in my opinion...
but there's a lot of MVC league games left - so time will tell.....
but here's how I think the voters will see the MVC Player of the Year race...
-Seth Tuttle - 15.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg overall, 18 ppg/7.4 rpg in league play
Strong points - Tuttle is increasing his produciton down the stretch and he had a great game on TV in an widely viewed matchup with Wichita State.
Suddenly the national gurus know who he is and are giving him some attention - he's NATIONAL Player of the Week - LINK
Barring injury, he will pick up all the votes from those who go with the trend...
-Ron Baker - 16.0 ppg, 40.1% from 3-pt - and he's kinda been the media's favorite until they turned on the TV this weekend and saw Tuttle.
Strong points - Baker seems to do what's needed in the clutch and he's actually got people hyping/talking NBA Draft but I'll believe it when I see it.
-Fred Van Vleet - 11.7 ppg, 56.4 assists, 3.4 A/T Ratio
Strong points - he's a point guard and has been on lots of sports guru's radar screen since last year - and has a knack for hitting big shots, but virtually all of his numbers are actually DOWN a bit from last year - so I just don't see him repeating as POY.
-Egidijus Mockevicius - 12 ppg & 10.6 rpg - 11.2 ppg & 11.2 rpg in league play
Strong points - he's a virtual double-double every night and is the best big man in the MVC since POB - maybe even farther back...(Benoit Benjamin?)
But - having a much higher scorer on his team and with Evansville dropping into a 4-5th place tie in the MVC - I just don't see him getting enough votes for POY -
so I think he finishes 4th, although, maybe 3rd or 2nd if he can rally the Aces back to 3-4th place.
Others who will get votes:
I believe DJ Balentine (19.6 ppg overall) was in the running until just a few weeks ago but - his scoring has fallen a bit to 16 ppg in league play
Tekele Cotton is a very valuable player for Wichita but his offense is not a strong point so he probably won't get the votes.
Anyway - after Wichita gave up 70 points, 60% overall FG shooting, 71% shooting form 3-pt, and 29 points to Seth Tuttle on National TV
- I think their defense-claim-to-fame has had a few pounds of air deflated out of it.
