  • City and Civic Center officials address possible Bradley move to Ren Col

Just in case Bradley had any serious thought about actually leaving the Civic Center, the mayor and Civic Center officials felt the need to call a meeting with the Peoria Journal Star staff (Kirk Wessler and Dave Reynolds) to explain why they think it's a bad idea.

When told of some of Bradley’s Carver Arena issues — a feeling of low priority for game date preferences, high rental costs, no share of concessions revenues, lack of available practice time and poor building upkeep — (Civic Center Authority chairman Bob) Manning said he was unaware of the complaints.
“I’ve been on the board five years and this is the first time I’ve heard that Bradley has these grievances,” Manning said.

So Bradley has had all the concerns we've seen about playing in the Civic Center, but somehow, they never bothered to tell anyone at the Civic Center about them?

IMO, this is much ado about nothing. The only 2 people in the entire city who said they wanted to move games to the Renaissance Coliseum were Joanne Glasser and Geno Ford, and they are out of the picture now or soon will be.
So it's nice to know Mayor Ardis and Bob Manning can pick up the phone any time they want, and get a private audience with Kirk Wessler and Dave Reynolds, regardless of how irrelevant the issue. But once the Bradley program gets into a new set of hands, and begins the inevitable turnaround, we will look back and realize this was all a meaningless exercise in self-promotion.

This whole conversation has been a joke since it came up earlier in the season. The only people to bring it up, were the people that have created this problem and are going to be gone next year.

but this is part of the problem at the Civic Center -- the complete apathy of those in charge down there to the problems that exist...

How can he NOT know about those problems - because those same problems have been talked about in the press for 5 years or more --
If Dr. Cross has never addressed those problems with the Civic Center management - then we have a problem...
because on multiple occasions Dr. Cross has spoken of the scheduling issue & not getting the dates he had asked for.
This has been brought up many times before, and they've talked about working together - he's discussed it in the chats!

Like when U of I was asking for dates to be set aside last summer (link) he even boasted about the great relationship with the Civic Center and it was said that he's "worked with the administration" of the Civic Center.
The Civic Center people then stated:
"..their (Bradley's) staff is phenomenal and my staff is great working with them
to create a harmonious working environment for everybody."

City & civic center officials, etc....

One comment while we are discussing the BU situation with the CivicCenter.....
As we begin to once again reach out to fans we need to consider the Braves Club which has been badly treated at the Civic Center. Currently, the only accommodation to the Braves Club is a free popcorn and soda line at the concession counter at halftime.
The BC used to have room with a bar, popcorn, etc. this was great place for our most loyal fans to gather and socialize at halftime. Years ago when we established the Chiefs Club (now the Braves Club) we set up this halftime room and it caused the club to grow and helped contributions.
Now,we have relegated the BC to a halftime popcorn line and given the old space over to the Braves Schol. society. Which is also important but should have never displaced the BC.
A BC room was tried on the far upper level in one of the back rooms but it never really caught on because of its long distance from the arena.
In summary, we need a Braves Club room with sit down tables, a full bar, popcorn, etc.
Brett Burchette, this would be a great and much needed project for you. Thanks.

Wiz, I can remember not so long ago there were Braves Club rallies, frequent bus trips, pre-game parties, and post-game events several times per season, including some road games, tournaments etc. I recall hundreds of fans taking charter flights to Las Vegas, Providence, Atlanta, and other sites organized by the Chief's Club (the non-politically correct forerunner to the Braves Club). The Braves Club also sponsored the Preseason banquet (when it was a separate event from the auction), the Itoo Hall event, spaghetti supper, the post-season banquet and the post-season team awards, and many other events.
Most of those events have been eliminated, with only a couple events per year like the pregame party in St. Louis. Even that has been a big dud in recent years, since Bradley has been locked into playing Thursdays, and then gets eliminated each year before most fans even were able to get to St. Louis.
The Braves Club still gets a lot of money from fans' maintenance donations, though I am sure that amount is way down like everything else, but it would be nice to see a few more of those dollars used for the fans themselves.

I am with you - I talk with other older guys, long time fans, and Braves Club members all the time - just as I chat with you, wiz, on a regular basis...
And as painful as it is for the folks in the Athletic Dept. to hear this, I am going to say it anyway...

They just don't feel appreciated. Period. They feel like their long time loyalty, support, donations, and presence at games is not just underappreciated - but downright ignored.
Many have said to me that a simple smile & a greeting, a warm handshake, or a "hi, how are ya" once in a while from the administrative level would do wonders.
I have heard dozens of long, long time loyal fans say the same thing - nobody even knows my name, cares if I am there, or wants to hear how I feel about this or that...
It was once way, way different - but again - the current people do NOT like to hear that - they think things are just fine now and they do NOT want to hear of any dissatisfaction.
And some of their efforts like trumping up that celebration of the 4 millionth fan and giving her prizes...have been offensive when it became clear she was a relative of the Chairman of the Bradley Board of Trustees!!

wiz - how many times have you felt like your efforts are appreciated lately - didn't you write twice and get that same letter from the Chairman of the Board just blowing off every concern you had and saying everything's better now than at any time in the past 30 years?

They need to treat fans better - sorry to be the messenger but that and the W-L's are why so many are giving up season tickets.

**ps - this ties in with the previously expressed sentiment that every season we should honor the players/coaches from the past as as well.
..and that we need to restore those vastly popular events like the Itoo supper, post-season banquets, and Braves tailgates

Not to pile on, but I also remember promotions like Red-Outs, Black-Outs, White-Outs, Stripe-Outs, and other T-shirt giveaways several times yearly in the past. I have an entire room full of fan towels, collapsible banners, mini basketballs, posters, t-shirts, magnet schedules, basketball card sets of past teams, pom poms, foam fingers, and even a bobble head of Marcellus Sommerville. It seems like Bradley doesn't do any of these kinds of things any more. Have I missed it?

Bill - they still have the T-shirt cannon, and if you are lucky, you get picked to shoot for BWW & get a t-shirt or free wings (but that is a sponsored event by Buffalo Wild Wings)

There was one promotion that I enjoyed and wish they'd do something like this more-
Bradley Basketball will try to avoid consecutive Valley home losses for the first time since 2012 when the Braves welcome #23 UNI to Carver Arena Tuesday night.

it was a half-court shot contest for a 2015 Porsche! - remember it?
They only did the promotion once at the game on Jan. 13 - and of course they picked a guy who couldn't even lob the ball to the FT line let alone make a half court shot. (LOL)

But the one-shot chance for a guy to win a new car was pretty interesting & exciting and it at least made me want to stay in my seat during halftime and cheer for the guy.
                Hope they do it again!
One of the General Managers of the Pearl Automotive is Bill Morton - a really great guy who is a big Bradley fan and who played on some of the good Peoria Central basketball teams under Bruce Boyle & Chuck Buescher back in the 1970's.

Converting the former Braves Club room into the Braves Scholarship Society, was done totally by the university. The foot soldiers of the Braves Club, according to the new Braves Scholarship Society, were not worthy of entering the room because they didn't give enough money.

I know of a Bradley basketball hall of famer that is not allowed in the Braves Scholarship Society room, because he doesn't give enough money. Isn't that nice?

There are a lot of things wrong with Bradley right now, but lets not rip the Braves Scholarship Society and the members who donate a minumum of $20,000 of their own hard-earned money each year to support the Bradley athletic department. I agree that we should show more respect to the Braves Club members, but not at the expense of those in the BSS who are very generously supporting Bradley athletics. Just my opinion.

It's interesting that Versace, Ferguson, Albeck, Molinari, Kavanaugh, and Les never had a problem with the civic center. Maybe it's because they didn't get their brains beat out and didn't need to make a bunch of excuses. This whole thing with the civic center is a bunch of idle talk. The university want to pass the blame to poor attendance and a poor record on the civic center. That is ridiculous. There are more open dates at the civic center now, than when any of the previous people mentioned were here. It is another excuse of blaming the wrong people for their problems. You put a product on the floor that is worth a crap, like BU has, and nobody will show up no matter where it's played. Who are they crapping?

I'm not ripping the BSS. They do a tremendous amount of good for the university. But lets not forget about the little guys either. The university has failed miserably at everything they do. To blame the civic center for changes the university made is ludicrous.

                            Pcc

Les and KK routinely tried to get changes and were frustrated by the PCC agreement. That was negotiated by Gary Anna.

Practice times.....games times among other things were constantly a challenge with the PCC. Some leverage was finally asserted under JL and few things like the renovations to the BU locker room etc were made. But BU was not accommodated often.

I guess I do not understand why BU seems to feel they owe anything to the city and CC---on the contrary--I think the CC and city should be grateful for BU all these years--but it sure does not seem that way I don't recall the actual figures--but I read some time ago the actual $$ it costs BU to practice/play at the PCC... plus the scheduling conflicts and other issues mentioned above--and how much revenue the CC gets from BU (concessions/parking etc etc). And that was back when we were competitive and drawing a decent amount of fans.

Anyway--I wondered then how it could possibly be cost effective for us?? Since the contract is up--and with our program being where it is at and likely no quick fixes on the horizon & attendance going further south next year...it seems to me that it would truly behoove us to move back on campus next year as we are going thru this down period--s save a LOT of money--get some new revenue from parking/concessions/ etc--no scheduling issues/travel etc and play in a packed environment for a year or 2 and see what happens. IF we (hopefully) recover--then perhaps explore adding seats to the RC on campus--OR--perhaps the CC will realize they need/want us back and would offer us an "offer we could not refuse" to return? Just my perspective.
                              Bradley football--undefeated again this year
