  • Fallout after the UC Davis-Hawaii game.

Plenty of fallout from jawing between players and unsportsmanlike conduct from the fans towards the end of the game. Davis made a lot of free throws to make a 14 point deficit look a little smaller. Les refused to have his team shake hands following the game. 1 arrest so far.

On the UC Davis website it had an article about the game but no mention of the extra curricular activities at the end of the game and no comments from JL about not shaking hands. Hawaii has always been a tough place to play, just ask Wichita. UC Davis is 14-4 and their next win will set an all time high for wins in Division 1 Basketball.

      interesting ...
but if you notice, all the technical fouls in the final 5 seconds of the game were on Hawaii - none on UC-Davis -

one of the technicals was for fans throwing objects at the UC-Davis players - thus Coach Les took his players directly to the lockerroom for their safety and this issue with the handshake is totally bogus.
BTW- even the Hawaii newspaper backs this version of events that paint 100% of the immature and offensive behavior as being Hawaii's not the UCD guys.

in an interesting twist - a remotely similar thing happened when Jim Molinari & Nebraska played at Hawaii - a raucous crowd and untimely technicals called on Nebraska's best player - which helped Hawaii win that one!

I watched this game - Hawaii had several kids (Valdes, Bobbitt, Nevels, and Webster-Chan) who constantly chirped, and did the in-your-face scream or a dance after every made basket as if they were beating Kentucky. That got the crowd into the game. I didn't see any of the UCD kids act that way, and it didn't seem to be necessary because Hawaii was winning big the entire 2nd half- they were up by as many as 26 points with 8 minutes left.
Then the people in the crowd started screaming at the UCD players, and throwing objects on the floor, many of them appeared to be thrown at the UCD players, especially as the UCD reserves started cutting into the Hawaii lead. The officials waited a bit too long to try to stop that behavior, and finally called a technical foul on the home team in the last minute or so, then another technical on Valdes for his jawing. That just got the students more riled up and they threw even more stuff.

Jim Les actually tried to defuse the situation by pulling his starters out of the game early, but Hawaii left their starters in to run up the score and to do more of their trash talking. After the game, Jim lead his players off the court quickly, and it was to get them out of the situation, not because he didn't want them to shake hands.

the Davis Enterprise has coverage this morning about that game and states plainly that the decision regarding the handshake was an agreed consensus between the Aggies coach and the Hawaii head coach
“for team safety,” there would be no postgame handshake. ”

btw - the Hawaii head coach is a long time friend of Jim Les - a former assistant at NIU & Indiana State, from Naperville, and more recently the coach at Chicago State
& Les even complimented their crowd & enthusiasm...

Hawaii fans & team - in trouble....

First two fans who were at that game throwing things on the floor have been arrested by police...

then - when the Hawaii basketball team played UC-Riverside - some very suspicious behavior reportedly took place in their hotel rooms in Riverside, CA...
The Honolulu newspaper is reporting that the hotel was required to do some substantial cleanup of drugs (and smoke - in a non-smoking room) and sent the bill to the Hawaii basketball team.

"the university is investigating what was being smoked by the team in Riverside
hotel rooms before and after the team’s win over the Highlanders. The hotel
has since sent UH a $500 cleaning bill."

"The University of Hawaii said it is looking into an allegation that marijuana
smoke in Riverside, Calif., rooms assigned to members of its men's
basketball team was the cause of $500 in cleaning fees billed to the athletic department.

Athletic director Ben Jay said, "I've been apprised of an incident in the hotel but I can't comment further."

The doped up Rainbow Warriors played a road game at UC Riverside on Jan. 17, losing to the Highlanders, 66-62.

A smoke alarm in a non-smoking room is said to have alerted security staff to one incident. A manager at the Riverside Marriott Convention Center declined comment.

The Marriott website lists a "room recovery fee for guests who do not comply in order to cover the extensive cost of restoring guest rooms to a smoke-free condition." UH said the fee is $250 per room.

Jay said the allegation is under "review" and declined to identify the occupants of the rooms citing "privacy rights issues." He also declined to confirm the number of players who have been interviewed in the case except to acknowledge, "it is more than one."
Coach Benjy Taylor declined comment after Monday's practice. The Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to leave Tuesday morning on an 13-day, four-game Big West Conference road trip.
UH officials would not say what the possible courses of action might be if the allegation is substantiated or if players would be required to pay the fees. The Student-Athlete Handbook says the department may drug test athletes and suspend those found to be in violation."

A team must be considerably better than Hawaii (15-20 points maybe?) to win a game with the home-standing Rainbows. The official calls there are some of the worst in college basketball; always has been.
