  • Record of failure

Just to update the records in the 3 1/2 seasons since the administration at Bradley made the coaching change in 2011, in case anyone wondered what they were-

    Geno's total record in 3 1/2 seasons is now 43-75 (.364).
Note: of all the previous Bradley coaches who coached more than 1 season, only Bob Vanatta has a losing record (22-33 [.400] in 2 seasons).

Geno's combined MVC regular season conference record is 17-43 (.283).

Postseason record against MVC opponents 0-4 (.000)

Total record against MVC teams is 17-47 (.266).

His record vs. MVC teams away from home is now 2-32 (.059).

Record in neutral court games 0-13 (.000).

Total record away from home in 3 1/2 seasons 6-51 (.105).

These numbers are some of the worst numbers for any Division I team over the last 3 1/2 years.
Seriously, is there anyone left who still denies there was substantial fallout from the administration's moves since 2011? Is there anyone who believe's we are better off? Why won't the PJ Star report these records?

P.S.-If the writers at the PJ Star would like to reprint my statistics, please feel free to do so without attributing them.

However, I have a hunch they won't, and will instead tell us that Bradley is improving in some way.

Given GF's previous coaching success, we can only assume his struggles at BU are due to insufficient talent.

No one goes from Conference Coach of the Year in successive years to a man incapable of coaching.

Why can't BU sign more talented H.S. and J.C. players?

    Can't blame practice/training facilities and medical/PT support
    Can't blame fan base
Can't blame stadium (unless Ren Col becomes home)
Can't blame competition (WSU, and UNI in the league)
Can't blame lack of non con tournament (US & Foreign)opportunities
Can't blame lack of big time post season Tournament in major city

Social opportunities for Afro American players?
Post university local business opportunities for alum players?
    University neighborhood?
    BU curriculum choices for players?
No phony grade point options for players?
    Little media exposure for BU?
Little support from BU player alums in program?

What I would love to see is PJ Star doing an anonymous survey of current MVC coaches/AD's/Univ Presidents (throw in CU in as well)
as to what they think the problem(s) is/are with BU's Athletic Program in general and MBB in particular. MVC would be better/stronger
if more teams were better, including BU.

Ah, at first I was going to complain about the 0-4 record against MVC opponents and then I remembered the UNI game in the CIT a couple of years ago.

These numbers are horrendous. Given Ford is making $800,000 a year for this is in my opinion "the great fleecing of Bradley fans". I am much more concerned the Board of Trustees is not addressing it than mere finger pointing by the PJS or Wessler and Reynolds having to eat crow. The real problem needs to be addressed by the Board of Trustees not the Journal Star. Until the Board of Trustees consists of people that stand up for what they believe, instead of quitting the BOT when things don't go their way, this problem will continue. And this problem is unacceptable both academically and athletically.

Other coaches/AD's/Univ Presidents are not going to comment of the demise of BU's athletic program and I'm sure the Commissioner of the MVC would not allow it. BU's athletic problems come from, once again, a Board of Trustees that hired a president and athletic director that shouldn't have been hired here. The president had the same problems at her previous stop as she has here. That's called a track record and the BOT overlooked it. The athletic director has a fancy name "Dr." and lots of diplomas and schooling. He didn't have any connection to coaches in Illinois or the Midwest. He obviously is not a very good judge of coaching talent or he wouldn't be hiring the failures that he has, while touting how great they are upon hiring them. It's not just basketball. Yes, this falls on the Board of Trustees and they don't seem to care.

I read that the Peoria Rivermen had 5,681 fans attend their game Saturday night. This is for a low minor league hockey team. This shows that there are plenty of people to support sports in Peoria. The fans have to perceive there is value to their time and money to watch the team perform.

Don't look now, but despite all the spin & hype in the press about how much better we are and how great our defense is, and how we are so deep, shooting better, and coming closer & closer to being a great team...
....except we are now tied for dead last in a relatively weak 2014-15 MVC that has FIVE TEAMS near or well above RPI 200!!!!
If we were just MEDIOCRE we ought to be in 5th place!! (note Evansville, ISU & Loyola all tied for 4th place despite kinda mediocre 3-3 records & ~100 RPI's)

The last new coach that was hired - took over a program in 2002 that had a down year with declining attendance...
he did NOT enjoy favorable press - instead he withstood brutal attacks from the press, and yet with decent play and good recruiting, note what happened..

Attendance rose immediately to well over 9000 (not many empties) - and then went up from there to 9,200-9,300 by years 3 & 4 then over 9,700 in Year-5
but this also included NUMEROUS 10,000+ crowds and even many sellouts...
Our current attendances are nosediving into historical, all-time low range since the Armory!!

We were competetive in the MVC in 2002-2006, - we were inside the top 50 in RPI (despite strong SOS) and by year four, despite tough injuries/losses of key players (Philip Gilbert, Gillingham, Franklin, O'Bryant, Granger) the program was nicely turned around with a Sweet Sixteen run.
Now that same kind of resurgence & turnaround is happening elsewhere - but we have headed in the wrong direction - we need new leadership, and we need it FAST or many of those long time fans will never be back.
This is all nothing new - it's what a few of us have been saying and pleading for four years - all the while clueless press & media have cheered on our unprecedented demise, and continually shot the messenger warning of all this fallout. But even worse - our admin still spouts the mantra that we're actually doing well and having all time GOOD athletic performance.
