Despite being arrested after a police found him in possession of marijuana during a traffic stop, Starting guard McAlarney is still practicing and travelling with the team, although he has not played.
Now he will plead guilty, go into a "diversion program" and if he avoids arrest and passes monthly drug tests for the next 12 months, his slate will be wiped clean.
This article notes that Notre Dame's own athletic handbook calls for suspension and/or expulsion for such offenses.

McAlarney's mommie says this
"All I know is my son was suspended yesterday...I don't know anything else beyond that. All I know is I'm ashamed of how they did this. ... I'm ashamed of the university. My son is a great kid. He did not deserve this. The punishment did not fit the crime.

The crime was DUI and possession of marijuana, caught after a traffic stop for a violation.
He will be suspended while his case is in court, but don't fret, he'll be back and given another chance to start next year.
