Geno loses his court appeat in his case with Kent State-

His only remaining option would be to appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court. I'd be surprised if he pursues that route. In brief, this ruling means he has lost the case to Kent State, and owes them $1.2 million.

I think they were fighting a losing battle by this playing out in the Ohio state court system. basically, it is the state of Ohio as the plaintiff,

the terms are plainly set in Geno's contract....
I can't believe there were expectations of winning...

When "Coaches leave jobs every year..." and don't have to pay their full buyout...
the reason is...

-either because they complied with the terms on the agreement (contract) and got the proper approval to seek employment elsewhere - which the court has ruled Geno did not

-or it is because the school chooses NOT to pursue damages - as Kent State chose not to pursue damages against Bradley - even though they won their claim against Bradley

even the dissenting justice appears only to dispute the amount of damages - not the fact that Geno owes them..

Most coaches will not sign a contract like this. I printed it out the day he was hired and I still have it. Last sentence of paragraph in section 7:

Accordingly, he will pay to the UNIVERSITY as liquidated damages an amount equal to his base and supplemental salary, multiplied by the number of years (or portion(s) thereof) remaining on the contract.

Kent State did not go after any "Supplemental" salary. 1.2M was his base.

Kent State is no slouch...they have already filed action in Peoria Co., IL to collect by garnishing his wages.

Among the interesting things included...

-that Geno Ford "fully understood" the clauses and requirements in the contract as it related to "liquidated damages" (buyout penalty) because "he was trying to have them removed".

-part of Kent State's claim of "damages" was that they also lost their Director of Basketball Operations, who also left and was hired by Bradley. (Jaden Uken)

-"fund raising, marketing" and ticket sales are also contractually required duties of the head coach per the court's ruling

-not only is Geno Ford obligated for the $1.2 million liquidated damages, but also for interest since the initial judgement plus costs for the appeal.

-the one dissenting judge made no effort to dispute that Geno is obligated to pay liquidated damages, but he did dispute the amount owed and that there
was no good way of knowing the amount of damages caused by Geno's early exit from the contract.

-Lastly - as has been stated before - as a result of a clause in Geno Ford's current contract with Bradley - that this decision is also a setback for Bradley because
Bradley University is contractually obligated to pay up to $400,000 of any buyout or liquidated damages that might be owed Kent State.
So Geno would be obligated for $800,000 plus interest & costs. (possibly pushing it closer to $1 mil)

I agree with you. Just for some perspective, Kent State has had six basketball and football head coaches depart for better offers since 2000; four in basketball. Coaches have left us frequently and on good terms. Geno Ford was the only exception. I don't know, but suspect the prevailing attitude at KSU is relief that this chapter has closed.

I was in Detroit the night that Bradley upset Kansas. Remember meeting great Braves fans appropriately passionate and proud. Sorry that you have to go through these seasons and truly hope better fortune lies ahead. Just have to say that reading through your comments is like d?Šj?  vu: athletic recruits that lack skills, inconsistent effort, poor execution, etc. Wonder if the coach will to start blame poor performance on the fans. That will complete the circle.

ksufan, I have the hoodie from Detroit with Kent state on it along with bradley. ..very interesting that there may be a pattern of behavior from this coach.

Well there's another kid closing in and he's only about 70 points behind LeBron and only about 100 behind Geno -
..and he's averaging 39 point per game with at least 5 more games left this season...
so in all likelihood, Geno will get passed in the record books in the next couple weeks...
