Yet another letter to the PJStar editor

This one calls out Dr. Cross for the explosion in overspending and debt in Athletics from $2 to over $7 million..
and also calls out the Peoria Journal Star for failing to report on this story...

"According to Athletic Director Michael Cross, seven years ago the athletic department deficit was $2 million per year.
Today it’s $7 million per year! That overspending diverts resources from our true mission.
What does matter is that our president is the highest paid for an institution of our type.
For many years there has been a goal of Bradley becoming a university of national distinction.
When the term was originally coined, I don’t think this is the type of distinction they had in mind.
This fact was reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education recently.
Where has the Peoria Journal Star been in reporting on Bradley?"

Another good letter to the Journal Star. Keep those cards and letters coming! Not only does it show how much the debt has increased under Cross's watch, but also how inept the Board of Trustees is to allow it to happen. They are asleep at the wheel and therein is the problem.

The board is engaged now ......Several key former board members and key current board members have put a plan in motion. A major turnaround plan still remains to be developed ...but there is now hope for the future.

A new President will be installed soon. The hard repair work will start after that.

That is exactly why things are so screwed up. Why would you have "key former board members" putting a plan in motion, they have no power? Who are they to be involved. Most of them probably quit the board because they didn't have the desire to stick around and stand up for what they believe and make a change for the better, when they had an opportunity. I wish you were right, but I will believe it when I see it.

I am also hearing that some new actions are about to take place at the Board's direction, and should be about completed by the time they meet for a special meeting on Feb. 2.

Not that I disagree (entirely), but let's be honest, athletics, good athletics, add resources to a university, not take away. Money put into the basketball program wisely can be considered an investment.

Does anyone else see a tiny conflict of interest in this guy's post? He works at the university and thinks more money should be spent on their true mission, which I'm guessing he believes includes his very own salary.

My point is this: spending heavily on athletics isn't/wasn't/won't be the problem. Spending without knowing what you're doing is. The guy making the post just sounds like someone whining about his own wants and needs not being met to me.

Lastly, I'd tell that poster this: Money is not what creates success, and that goes for athletics and academics alike. Money is what should come (but doesn't always) because of success, not vice versa.

Glad it was shared, though. Thanks Tornado. Definitely an interesting tidbit that I would never have noticed on my own!

Not that I disagree (entirely), but let's be honest, athletics, good athletics, add resources to a university, not take away. Money put into the basketball program wisely can be considered an investment...

but wise & good investments differ severely from bad investments that waste or lose money that does NOT belong to those squandering it.

What has happened at Bradley involves selfish, personal actions and tremendously wasteful squandering of resources built up over a decade by others who would have wanted and expected those funds to be spent a bit more wisely & responsibly.
Now even the other academic departments are forced to cut back, lose salary & bonuses, and lay off to make up for the ineptitude of others - mostly in Athletics.
