  • Historical games question

What was the game with the smashed backboard?

What was the game where there was a big fight?

These two and the Deon Jackson last second shot are some of my holy grails regarding finding copies of those games.

Big fight was at Villanova on Nov. 29th during the 1995-1996 season, the only thing I really remember is Zobrist lost a tooth. That years Nova team featured a couple NBA players Kerry Kittles and Alvin Williams.

That date is correct, November 29, 1995. Here is an AP article with the story of the game and the fight-

However, one correction- it was not Aaron Zobrist that lost a tooth. Zobrist was not involved at all in the fight, but he did suffer a severe ankle sprain late in that game, and missed several games after that (I think he missed 4 games).

It was Deon Jackson who lost a tooth, and had another one chipped and a couple others loosened when he was elbowed hard in the mouth by Villanova player Chuck Kornegay on a rebound. That is what started the fight, which lead to the ejections of Bradley's Ben Coupet and Villanova's Jason Lawson and Chuck Kornegay. Deon Jackson was taken to a local hospital and had Xrays which showed no fractures. However, he spent many hours in a dentist's chair upon returning to Peoria for some reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry work.

The last second Deon Jackson shot was in the 1996 MVC tournament semifinal game against Missouri State on March 3, 1996. Bradley won 64-62 when a last second play was fumbled by Deon in the lane and the ball bounced out past the 3-point line. Deon ran out and picked up the loose ball, turned and flung in a wild 3 pointer at the buzzer to win.
Here is a brief YouTube video of that game-winning shot-

And here is an article about it-

In 2010, the Missouri Valley conducted a fan vote for the Top 20 moments in the 20 years that the MVC Tournament had been in St. Louis.
The Deon Jackson game-winning shot was voted the #1 moment in Arch Madness history-

it was a Jerry Thomas dunk that broke the backboard and a short video clip of that does exist and has been used as part in the intro video before games a couple year ago..

If someone made a compilation of Bradley's memorable moments, that would be the centerpiece of my collection. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

That shot by Jackson won an ESPY for college basketball play of the year. I remember that shot as well as the Nova game well as both happened during my time at Bradley. Remember watching the Nova game at the Lucy Lady enjoying pitchers and pizza, and watching the Deon game at 1622 W Bradley at our off campus house.

Does anybody remember this game at the Fieldhouse during the 1977-78 season? Somebody was shooting a free throw for Bradley and Bobby Humbles was standing between the top of the key and the center circle. While standing there, a metal weight attached to a rope and secured to the ceiling, dropped to the floor right next to Bobby with a loud bang. If it would have hit Bobby, it would have at least knocked him out. That may have been the highest I'd ever seen Bobby jump.

I do remember the weight falling. Scared the crap out of me. I think it would havve done a lot more damage than knocking him out. Thank heavens it missed him.
