  • BU Recruiting Targets

I went to the Pekin Holday Basketball Tournament yesterday and watched several games.
I watched a couple of Washington and Richwoods' games, and saw Geneseo and a couple other teams.
The kids of both local interest and of interest as BU recruiting targets are Geneseo's Tyler Storm, Washington's Matt Roth, and there were also D-I recruits Bill Cole, Justin Dehm, and Rockford Boylan's Tori Boyd. Boyd was a kid that Jim Les went to see last summer when Boylan played at Richwoods during the summer shootout but has since verablled to UI-C.

Geneseo also has a second kid who visited and was one of the recruits at last Saturday's game at the Civic Center.

If anyone has interest and wants to know my thoughts on all these kids-
Private Message me and I will give you a full report.

A few of these guys were just reviewed by Van Coleman

And here's a story on a kid named Brett Thompson, that Bradley is after....see the mentio of the schools he is hearing from
"courted by prestigious basketball programs including Illinois, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Southern Illinois, Michigan, Bradley and Cincinnati."

Here is one more link to some info on the Pekin Tourney.

I didn't see Washington's game where Sean Johnson got 35 points, but he must have had a lot of open looks.

But I don't agree with this guy's asessment of Cully Payne, the kid who verballed to Jerry Wainwright and DePaul after his 8th grade season.

Seems everyone lists Payne in their top 10 and says he's a solid D-I player.

      Here is my assessment:
He is 5-11 maybe 5-10, and thin.
I know he's only a soph, but he is about the same size since he was in 8th grade.

He is listed as a PG, but he takes just about every shot he can and dribbles the ball to much.
He does not pass much, and in the two games at the Pekin tourney, he had a total of ZERO assists.
That's right....he had a total of ZERO assists in both games!

The guy at ilprepbullseye says Cully's team is not very good:
"It is almost unfair to give a reasonable assessment of Payne's game because unfortunately there is no other way to say it--the rest of his team is not that good"

But I say part of the problem is Cully. The whole purpose of this team's play seems to try to showcase Cully, at the expense of the rest of the team.
      Cully is not double teamed.

But the ilprepbullseye guy says two things that are just silly:

First was that Payne's team (other than him ) are bad.
That's just really unfair, since there seems to be some connection between Cully Payne, his parents, and the coaching at Burlington.

Here are two links to worries on the DePaul team that they are getting a 6-0 shooting guard when they thought they were getting a kid who can play pont guard.

      The ilprepbullseye guy says:
"In addition to being a playmaker, Payne is looking to shoot much more this year"

From what I saw, this kid is always looking to shoot, and is not much of a playmaker as evidenced by these two links that show Cully's stats.
He takes a lot of shots, and gets fouled a bunch because he is the only one who ever has the ball,
BUT--- in these two games he didn't get a single assist.

Is Matt Roth a senior and what position would he play at the DI level?

I believe that Matt is a Junior and would most likely play the 2 guard position.

Yes, I just looked on the website and he is a junior at 6'3" but who really knows how tall he is... When I played I was listed at 5'11" when I was really 5'8". Another 2 guard. WOW. Maybe he can have a Roger Phegley growth spurt and get to 6'7".

As much as I would like to see Matt Roth in a BU uniform, I 'm not really sure if we need or want him anymore as guard heavy as we are right now. I also wonder if Matt will still consider Bradley due to all the competition he may face for playing time at the guard position. I still think he would be a great replacement for JC when he graduates.

Payne's coach at Burlington is his uncle.

Matt was selected as MVP at the Pekin Holiday Tournament this evening, as his Panthers defeated Pekin 65-58 for the tournament title.

I haven't figured out how many rides the Braves have left for 2008? I know Daniel West will get 1......how many more are there? As of right now.......I do not count XC as getting one.....but who knows for sure?

My guess is 3 rides for the 2008 season....JC-DR and MS will all be seniors and JF will be playing his Jr season next year! With that being said the Braves would have 2 spots to fill if Daniel West signs his LOI next year........right?

                        Bingo.
And while Matt Roth swept away the MVC award at the Pekin Holioday Tournament,
Cully Payne's Burlington Central lost yesterday to 4-8 Lanphier,
with Cully going 1-17 on FG shooting.

                              All Tourney

This is great news Grassman! I now can go through life knowing that I, too, could have been an All-Tourney caliber player. I'm sure I'd be able to hit at least one shot if I threw up (no pun intended) that many shots in a game. Gotta applaud the kid for his confidence?
