      cruel

That's pretty cruel: subjecting those kids to Bradley Basketball. :-)

Seriously, I see that as a worthwhile field trip. I just hope that there was no abuse of funds or something like that.

I believe it would have been an NCAA violation if BU had given those tickets away for free.

I'm not exactly sure how the rule reads, but I am almost positive, members of the NCAA cannot give tickets away for free that normally have a fee, to schools. They may be able to sell them at a discounted rate, but not for free. There is a very fine line in the distributing of "comp" tickets. To illustrate the sensitivity in the giving away of free tickets, every season ticket holder should receive a letter, indicating the proper and improper way of giving tickets away that they are not going to use. Although giving tickets away for free in large blocks sounds good in a perfect world, it can lead to an incredible amount of problems, ranging from recruiting to people selling the give away tickets for a profit.

Yes. But every school and their compliance people may interpret the wording of the NCAA rules a little differently. I believe Bradley interprets the "Impermissable Benefits" clause more broadly than a lot of other schools. They believe the term "recruitable student athlete" starts well back before high school, and extends even after graduation. Bradley boosters are even cautioned about giving players a job or doing favors for them after graduation, because they believe it may still be a violation.
