  • Off topic- Cubs to hire Joe Maddon

Looks like the Cubs will be the 2015 World Series champion. They just reached agreement with former Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon to take over as manager for the Cubs. He becomes their 5th manager in a little over 4 years (Pinella, Quade, Sveum, Renteria, and now Maddon).
And in other news, the 7th game of the World Series is tonight!

YES!!! Looks like Theo and the Cubs are upping their time table. Will be curious to see how they spin this as it was just 3 weeks ago that Theo announced the coaching staff for 2015 which included Renteria as manager.

Wow, some baseball people are criticizing how this Maddon hiring went down, saying it doesn't look good for him to opt out of his Tampa Bay contract, and days later take the Cubs job, after Renteria was confirmed as their 2015 manager. Some are even calling it classless.
Joe Maddon has reportedly come to terms with the Chicago Cubs to be their next manager, and those around the league aren't happy about it.

Every new manager for Cubs is always going to be a savior. Only problem is, the players will still be wearing Cub uniforms.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

Here are some interesting managerial statistics-

I have always been a fan of Joe Maddon, and I think he is a good manager. But I was surprised by what these numbers show.

First, Joe Maddon's career managerial statistics-

He is 781-729 (.517) in 11 seasons (2 partial seasons with the California Angels, and 9 with the Tampa Bay Rays).

Here is an interesting site that lists every manager in MLB history based on statistical evaluations of how many wins they helped their team produce, similar to the WAR (wins above replacement) stat that people use to evaluate a player's value.-

"Wins Above Expectancy" uses 2 different methods- WAE using a Pythagorean method, and WAE using a method similar to the WAR for players, which gives more consideration to the level of talent each manager had on his team. Plus it has a combined stat in the far right column.
              The columns are sortable-
Oops, looks like the page is lost. Start your website on the cheap.

Notice that in the Total WAE (far right column) Joe Maddon is near the bottom (644th) of the list of 686 managers all time in MLB history with his -22.1 Total WAE (22.1 wins below expectancy).

Using the Pythagorean method, he is only -2.4 wins above expectancy (in other words, 2.4 wins below expectancy), which is a little below average.

But using the WAR method, he is -20.1 wins above expectancy, a horrible number, ranking 664th out of 686 managers all time!

Based on the good and bad managers I see up and down that list, I'd say it is not a very good statistic.

well, I know things could still fall apart for the Cubs, but in less than two years after being hired, Joe Maddon is now leading the best team in baseball. I think those stats maybe proved less than the GM knew...

I know you were being cynical but you can claim to have got the basic info right - just missed the date by a little

ahhh...game 7 2014....after seeing how pitchers did on short rest it really makes you appreciate what Bumgarner did that series...coming back in relief in game 7 to pitch 5 shutout innings after pitching a complete game shutout in game 5
