wow - things are really moving fast in some places - and here as well - indicating just perhaps some of these plans were already being pursued
and finalized even before the firings were made final.
However - the volume of jobs opening up is down - by this time last year & in 2012 - almost 30 head coaching positions were open and needed filling...
this year - just 21 so far with just 3 being prime spots in the major conferences
Greg controlled basically the whole show and used the injury excuse.
I enjoyed listening to that....would encourage people to spend a little time & listen..
Geno never denies that he didn't win enough and his firing was expected...
Some kind words about Chris Reynolds..Peoria... and Bradley - does not sound bitter
and most of the conversation was partly joking & partly serious about his future & what he'll do next...
He will probably seek out some coaching position but noted that if he aims poorly and has another bad stint then his coaching career would likely be done - so he has to choose carefully and get winning again..
no mention of finances - he's earned in the range of $3 mil over the 4 years he's been here then just got (or will be getting) a buyout of over another $million - but a lot of his talk kinda centered on whether he'd be ok or land on his feet.
But seriously - most people could get by at least a few months on a couple million wouldn't ya think?
If Alabama wants to go all out to get Marshall, they will spend any amount of money to get him. Wichita better have very deep pockets if it gets into a bidding war with Alabama.
I listened to the show and Geno handled it as he always handles himself, with a lot of class. I thought it was a heartfelt interview and he understands the dismissal was due to failing to get the job done here.
There is no question that a coaching change was needed. The last couple of weeks had to be pretty tough on him and I don't know anybody that would have handled it better than he did. He still spoke highly of Bradley, the fans and the Peoria area.
Southeast Missouri just fired Head Coach Dickie Nutt after 6 seasons. He never had a winning record in the OVC, and never had an RPI better than 221 (284 this season).
SEMO also just fired their women's basketball coach - Ty Margenthaler -
he's son of Jack Margenthaler - past men's coach at WIU, and Ty was a women's assistant under Paula Buscher at Bradley from 2000-2006
The Augustana head coach Grey Giovanine just won the DIII Coach of the Year...
could he be in the mix to get a DI job? - If you recall - he was close friends with Chin Coleman.
School - Coach fired....
Alabama - Anthony Grant
Alcorn State - Luther Riley
Arizona State - Herb Sendek Bradley - Geno Ford
Charlotte - Alan Major - hired Mark Price
Citadel - Chuck Dreisell
DePaul - Oliver Purnell

George Mason - Paul Hewitt

edit - Arizona State's Herb Sendek is fired - which is odd, since just a couple months ago they extended his contract from 2016 out to 2017 at $1.3 mil with incentives

What kind of university gives a coach an extension only to fire him soon thereafter? That's weird!
Larry Bird
I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.
if you read the story - it is apparent the one-year extension was a carrot on a stick - with numerous possible extras including 1 or 2 more years automatically added on to his contract extension with raises if he achieved certain specified levels of success.
I think this was posted in another thread, but here it is again. Aabama has lots of football and BCS money to throw around, and they are prepared to throw at least $3 million at Gregg Marshall in an attempt to hire him away from Wichita State- Alabama prepared to make big run at Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall
Marshall was interviewed by Jim Rome yesterday, and said he'd listen to Alabama's offer. This article claims the Alabama offer is "close to $4 million"....

You know I was being facetious, right? After all, we did the same thing with Geno!

Wichita does not have enough money to compete against Alabama for Marshall. They better hope Marshall likes the Midwest and doesn't want to move from Wichita.
