  • SIU loses potential starter

The official initial report from SIU Head Coach Barry Hinson is that SIU guard Tyler Smithpeters has left the team to deal with a "personal matter".
Reports are emerging that it is a matter of conduct, and that he has been suspended. Hinson would not confirm that. The exact details have not been revealed by the team or university, and the Carbondale newspaper was not able to reach Smithpeters for comment. However, from what I have been told, it may be more serious than it appears, and there is a good chance the facts will eventually emerge.

It's being reported by Carbondale media that Smithpeters is not only suspended from the basketball team, but is suspended from the university. He is not allowed to attend classes. The Carbondale police have decided not to file charges at this point, though in some places they would be, IMO.

He is kicked off of campus, not allowed to practice or attend class. If he loses his appeal, he is done at SIU. Please explain to me how this is soft? What more could the university have done?

I can't say for sure, but I think he may be referring to the media coverage, not the response by the university.

Maybe he was referring to the police? What do you think about the police choosing not to pursue this?

And though the official response from SIU is that they will not comment because "it is a personal issue", it seems pretty widely known what the issue is. I have now heard from multiple sources the same story. Surely the Carbondale media knows more than they are reporting. Do they always take their marching orders from the people at SIU?

For the record, I know people who know the Smithpeters family, and Tyler is a great kid.

That's to bad but doesn't surprise me a whole lot. Watched his act 2 years ago at the state Tourney. Can't say for sure if he was the one that supposedly created the problem but heard from some people close to the situation he may have been involved. Very ugly situation. Everyone denies they didn't say what they were being accused of saying but something sure turned that game ugly and both schools were put on probation.

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Tyler Smithpeters appealed his suspension to the Chancellor of SIU, and apparently this afternoon, the Chancellor overruled the suspension, and thus Smithpeters was reinstated to the university. There is no official word from the AD or Coach Hinson regarding his status with the team, but he is eligible to resume practicing immediately.

I remember that. There was a big kid on his team that was the supposed #1 instigator. Some big football bodied kid.

                          Latest article from Carbondale paper

                          Latest article from Carbondale paper-
Smithpeters reinstated to SIU, but not men's basketball team
http://thesouthern.com/news/local/sm...f7145957d.html (you may need to answer a question before the article is shown)

Still no further details of the specific reason for the suspension.

so now we have at least three MVC teams where a potential starter had just had either an arrest/conviction (one is a felony)
or a suspension due to some violation...and at least two other teams just had players arrested at the end of last season -
but there could even be more, I haven't kept up with all the other teams

SIU has a long held pattern of this...

If the kid is a non-starter or a bit player - then he's gone & it opens up a scholarship (LINK, LINK, and many others)
But if the kid is talented or a starter like Tatum, Brooks, and plenty of others, they get chance after chance after chance -
even Ryan Hare was given numerous chances before he had to go...(LINK, LINK, LINK, etc....)

Late this afternoon it was announced that Tyler Smithpeters was reinstated to the SIU basketball team. However, apparently the conduct case against him is still ongoing.
