  • Pick-em for Wednesday's Game at Northern Iowa

First Valley game of the season, and the very first conference game at the new UNI arena (the McLeod Center).
They are expecting a sellout, but students are on break.
....so I'd love to give them the kind of game Bradley gave them last time we played there.

On 2/22/06 Bradley beat UNI soundly, 71-49.
Bradley had a nine point lead at half and ran away in the 2nd half.
BU shot 59.6% from the field and 60% (6-10) on 3 pointers, three of them from JJ Tauai who the Panthers must have decided in their pregame preparations, that they didn't need to bother guardiung him.
They left JJ so wide open that the situation begged for him to nail those threes. That game was the last in their old domed stadium (the UNI-dome), and it drew 8,074.

Wednesday they expect to draw a full house, but nobody's really sure sure how much a full house is, as they will have some SRO tickets and there is a luxury suite that seats quite a few, and so the final attendance depends on how they count everyone.

When plans began for the new McLeod Center, initially they were going to build it with a capacity of under 5,000. But then Northern Iowa basketball had several unprecedented, great seasons, and demand for seating swelled so much that during the construction phase, the plans were changed to increase capacity.
Now they say the total capacity of the arena is 7,000 (7,018 by one reference) but that includes even if people were packed in standing on the floor.
The full seating capacity is said to be 6,100. However it is believed that that figure of 6,100 is generous, since it includes seats that won't sell for basketball because of proximity to the court, and other factors.
It is possible that a sellout of seats might be only 5,800 or so.
They have approval for up to 500 "Standing Room" tickets (in the "Observation Deck") but many of the people in this observation deck will also be people who have season tickets, and by game time will leave the deck and go to their seats.

And there are some problems even with the seating as it is.
There are too few aisles, and some sections have seating that is 30 seats across, so that some fans in the middle of sections will have to push past 14 or more people to get in.
Also the seats on one of the end sections are plain bleacher seats.

UNI has averaged 6,305 per home contest this year, BUT the really big game vs. Iowa State was held at the UNI-dome not the McLeod Center, and drew 9,517.
Of the games they have held in the new McLeod Center, they have drawn an average of 5,502.

They struggled a bit to unload tickets for their game with Wartburg (DIII) last Wednesday, and ran a promotion to virtually give away tickets. They still only had 5,112 there.

    OK--- now to the Pick-em.....

Guess the attendance for the very first conference game at the new McLeod Center in Cedar Falls.

As a tie breaker, guess the shooting percentage for Bradley
(total shooting pct. on all FG's, not the 3-pt shooting pct.)

    Here are my guesses:
