Here's one for the old timers....
I just bumped into an old guy that I know and see from time to time named ******** (I removed his name just because he's not a board poster to be able to refute )
anyway -- he was born & raised locally...still lives here - and he played basketball briefly (one season) for Bradley in the 1950's...
(Once a Brave - Always a Brave!)
anyway - he was telling a story about a game where Bradley voluntarily pulled him off the floor to play 4-on-4 - just out of pure sportsmanship since the opponent had fouled out so many guys they were down to just four players.
Anyway - I was kinda doubtful of his 60-year old memory but not any longer, as I actually found the newspaper account of that game ...
and here it is....
"Bradley Swamps St. Mary’s 96-59"
PEORIA, Dec. 28, 1952 — Bradley University, using reserves for most of the second half,
trounced St. Mary’s of California 96-59 in an intersectional basketball
game Monday night. St. Mary’s used up all of its 10 men traveling squad
and needed more as Lou Geiszberger became the sixth man to foul out
with one minute of the game remaining. Bradley pulled out **** *********
(player's name -- it wouldn't be hard if you wanted to dig up his name)
and the two teams each finished with four of their men on the floor,
Bradley, hitting on 29 out of 64 shots, romped into a 45-29 halftime bulge and
gained steam the rest of the way. Bradley used 14 players in all. St. Mary’s,
absorbing its second loss in seven starts, collected only 16 field goals in 70 attempts,
George McLaughlin, 6-4 center, scored 23 points before fouling out in the last two minutes.
Bob Carney topped Bradley with 20 points."
