Paul George breaks his leg in Team USA Blue-White scrimmage game

Team USA played a scrimmage game tonight in Las Vegas. Derrick Rose played extremely well. It was an entertaining game, when in the 2nd half, Indiana Pacer Paul George was trying to defend a breakawaay layup when he landed against the padding at the base of the basket support, and suffered a gruesome injury to his lower right leg.

Clearly, his lower tibia and fibula (the 2 long bones in the lower leg) were broken. It is an injury that can take up to a year to recover from, so he will probably miss the 2014-15 NBA season.

Reports from Las Vegas are that Paul George underwent surgery overnight, and they found some good news- no damage to nerves or blood vessels.

Wow - terrible - hope he can make a comeback but it is reminiscent of the injury to Louisville's Kevin Ware...
it is such a terrible fracture that even with full healing there will undoubtedly be some muscle loss and scar tissue.

used to be that the base of the goal support was far enough back that it wasn't a factor...
but players are so athletic now...so this could lead to calls for all baskets at the NBA or college level to have that space right beneath the basket kept clear...


Here's the difference....
the backboard support is only a couple feet off the baseline at UNC but there is no such obstruction at Duke,
as the basket there is suspended from overhead

now Australia is being investigated for throwing a game intentionally just to avoid a match up with the US team
