  • Today is the beginning of Bradley Summer Session II

The second summer session begins today - so are any of the other players on campus yet, or are we falling behind any?

Jermaine Morgan, Tramique Sutherland, and Kendall Amerson all were said ...
"won't arrive until later this summer as they finish up course work .."

And Warren Jones had some surgery on his thumb upcoming while Omari Grier was rehabbing from his hip surgery.

Donte Thomas was said to be:
" ..far from being in basketball shape .. won't be cleared to participate in contact drills until mid-July"
So that's at least six guys who have either been absent or not 100% - wonder if there's any update on any of them, and do they have enough guys to even scrimmage 5 on 5 when allowed to...

Warren Jones' thumb injury is a ligament tear - and as you can readily find from medical references on the internet - most ligament injuries do not need surgery...
BUT -- if one does, then the repair and subsequent recovery and rehab period can go out 6 months or more (shortly after surgery the player can begin conditioning, workouts, and training but definitely cannot use the hand or thumb yet) - same as ligament surgery on larger joints - in fact just as important as the surgery on larger joints if you get too active too soon then you stretch or rupture the repaired ligament and have to do it over.
(This was the thumb on his shooting hand)

So although some players can come back faster - 2-3 months - some need longer...

We are only 2 months from the start of practice - so maybe could this injury/recovery affect him enough to require a redshirt?

Warren Jones' thumb surgery will keep him out of practices and scrimmages all summer. In Dave Reynolds' article from June 12, he states "Jones is facing surgery on his right thumb, which would sideline him from contact drills for three months....'I haven’t played since May 13th so my conditioning isn’t good. But I like it here.'”

So this is not good news. This surgery affects his shooting and dribbling hand, and the recovery time will take him into September or October until he will be cleared for full contact. Coaches were counting on Jones to be a key contributor, possible starter as a 2-guard, and backup point guard.

        Other injury issues:
        This one is good news-
Freshman Donte Thomas injured his right knee, a meniscus tear that occurred in January. His surgery was January 17. But I have heard he is essentially 100% recovered, cleared for full participation, and he is playing well. He just needs to build up his conditioning, which he is doing.

Omari Grier, who had surgery April 1 for a hip problem (a torn labrum), is still slowly working his way back into shape. This is a surgery that can take many months to recover from, so it's possible it could still be affecting him when the season officially starts. He was making great progress under the care of trainer Chris Williams, but now he has left to take a position at Texas Tech. And now I understand another top assistant trainer is also leaving.
