Doug McDermott was drafted #1 overall by the Denver Nuggets. Then Denver traded him to the Chicago Bulls for the Bulls' #16 and #19 picks.

Yay.
The Bulls gave up two 1st Round picks, a pick next year, and took on a contract (Randolph) that will make it nearly impossible to sign Anthony now for a guy who probably is a 7th man in the NBA because he can't defend a position.
This was just awful for the Bulls. Gary Harris, who went 19th with the Bulls second pick, would have been a better choice. And they still would've had the 16th pick, the pick next year, and retained a hope of signing Anthony.
Gar/Pax are absymal

On the other hand, Gary Harris was felt to be overrated by many NBA people. A bunch of them passed on Harris, not just the Bulls. He may be a little too slow and not big or physical enough to guard other 2-guards in the league. He was measured at only 6'2.5" at the predraft combine! That is too small in the minds of many NBA execs to play the 2-guard in the NBA. Plus he shot only 35% from the NCAA 3-point line, compared with McDermott's 45%. We'll see. If the Bulls drafted him, he would have had to play behind Jimmy Butler, who is a star for the Bulls, and who lead the entire NBA in minutes played last season. The Bulls did need another backup, they needed someone who could help them improve right away.

Plus there is a lot of thinking out there that getting Melo will require a sign and trade with the Knicks, who are almost devoid of size, making Anthony Randolph an option for that. I'm sure they wanted him as either part of that or as an insurance policy if they have to give up Taj.Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

One more comment on Doug McDermott- it remains to be seen how effective his game will be in the NBA where he will be guarded by big athletic forwards every night. I think his intelligence, his ambidextrous shooting, and quick spin moves, coupled with his great 3-point shooting will do well.
But there is one other factor that made NBA executives covet him- he is the only American born caucasian player drafted in the first 20 picks. Such players are now a minority in the NBA. There were only 4 American born caucasian players in the entire 2014 draft- McDermott at #11, Mitch McGary of Michigan at #21, Joe Harris of Virginia at #33, and Alec Brown of Wisconsin-GB at #50.
To demonstrate how uncommon that has become, the countries of Canada and Serbia each had 4 players drafted in the 2014 draft, and a couple other countries also had multiple draftees.

Most NBA experts are still predicting that Love will most likely end up with the Cavaliers. Minnesota would probably prefer to trade for younger prospects and draft picks, which the Cavs are offering, rather than for proven players, since the Timberwolves would still be far from a contender. I personally would prefer to see McDermott, Mirotic, and Gibson stay with the Bulls. Minnesota is probably playing the Bulls offer against the Cavs' just to get them to throw in another high draft pick or two.
