  • NBA Draft underway - first pick is....

    Cleveland Cavaliers take...
Andrew Wiggins from Kansas (not Nick Wiggins from Wichita State)

...up to this point Bradley was tied with Kansas for the number of #1 overall draft picks...now Kansas moves ahead with two (Danny Manning)

Bucks will now take Jabari Parker with the 2nd pick.

..in what will be one of the deepest drafts talent-wise in a long time...

saw some predictions Doug McDermott may get taken as high as 36 by Celtics...but more likely 9-12....

#2 - Bucks pick Jabari Parker
#3 - 76ers pick Joel Embiid even tho he just underwent foot surgery

ESPN analyst Andrew Lynch just gave this comparison....

"Joel Embiid 2014 NBA Draft Profile
    7-0, 250 POUNDS | CENTER | KANSAS

    Strengths: Athleticism, coordination, shot-blocking
    Weaknesses: Health, lack of experience
    Player Comparisons: Patrick O'Bryant ..."

seriously...the guy just lost a major amount of credibility....

#5 is Dante Exum, the big Australian guard who's stock skyrocketed in the postseason events and in private workouts.

Vonleh should go next but his rep said they are surprised - thought they'd be going higher

McDermott probably being hurt by the history of great college players like Adam Morrison & Jimmer Fredette - and to some degree JJ Redick - struggling in the NBA

The #10 pick by the Philadelphia 76ers is 6'4" point guard Elfrid Payton of Louisiana Lafayette.

Payton really rose quickly in mock drafts and is though to be one of the best point guards in the 2014 draft, but I find this pick by Philadelphia a bit strange,
The 76ers have Michael Carter-Williams, a pretty good point guard, and the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2013-14, and they needed scoring. The 76ers were, by far, the worst 3-point shooting team in the NBA, and the 2nd worst shooting team overall. Payton is a poor shooter (25.9% on threes), and he lead all of Division I in turnovers.

The #11 pick was Doug McDermott to Denver- but then Denver traded McDermott to the Chicago Bulls for picks #16 & #19.

Now this pick makes a little more sense- Philadelphia did not want Payton for themselves. They have traded him to the Orlando Magic for the rights to Orlando's #12 pick Dario Saric.
I still think Payton is too skinny, not a good enough ball handler or shooter, and is a few years away from being an NBA point guard.
