Interesting read on Rutgers who are now joining the Big Ten...
But they are right now at a huge disadvantage compared to most other Big Ten schools....
-first their overall budget & revenue are small compared to most of the schools in the Big Ten
-but they have a huge amount of debt & "financial hurdles" accumulated from a number of sources...
...they had to fire their basketball coach Mike Rice & AD Tim Pernetti - and that cost them $2.2 million in buyouts
...$11.5 million in exit fees to get out of the Big East/Anerican Athletic
...and here's an odd one - they had to pay up $7 million to buy out of a contract with Nelligan so they could change and take the best bid from between IMG Marketing & Learfield - then as soon as they do that, Learfield buys out Nelligan anyway - sort of making that $7 move completely unnecessary & senseless.
...Donations to the athletic department dipped to $6 million last year, a drop from $9 million in 2012 - largely from dissatisfaction over the changes
...Rutgers has to wait six years to get their full share of Big Ten revenues & TV contract money...
...and there's uncertainty if the Rutgers fan base will show the same kind of interest to a slate of all new opponents that are no longer regional but 1000 miles away..
