  • ISU Athletic Director goes on a rant... "Middle of the pack is NOT OK"

...and he means business and is firing head coaches who do not perform.....Hmmm..

    ISU Athletic Director Larry Lyons....
"....made it clear Friday: the middle of the pack is not OK.
He expects more from Illinois State’s athletic programs and is not afraid to demand it.
We know that now with Lyons’ decision not to renew the contract of 12th-year track and cross country director/head coach Elvis Forde.
Lyons’ coaches know it too, a positive to be sure.
In effect, Lyons put them on notice that championships matter.
Go too long without one and he’ll show you the door.
That is important for any athletic director, but especially one who has been at a place as long as Lyons yet is relatively new to the A.D. role."

He is even making it clear that just being a firend or a good guy doesn't matter - results matter...

"Friday’s announcement let it be known friendship/familiarity do not excuse mediocrity. That mindset is essential to building
    and maintaining championship caliber programs.
..Finishing on top means raising the bar for coaches and the programs they oversee. Friday was an indication Lyons is prepared to do that.
If that makes other coaches on campus squirm a bit, so be it. Lyons will be there to support them, but he also will hold them accountable."

wow, sounds tough - but that's what schools really need - accountability - not rewarding and extending coaches that cannot win even close to half their games!

That's the AD's job. If the coach can't win show him the door.

Indiana State's Athletic Director getting high praises likewise...also some really good press coverage...
"..interesting times for ISU athletics. I hope ISU fans and Terre Haute natives realize the good thing they have in their own backyard."
